Katherine Harwood

Katherine "Kate" Pauline Harwood, 53, died at Athens Regional Hospital, in Athens, on Saturday, July 19, 2014, after a brief hospitalization.
Kate was born in Waverly, Iowa, on October 4, 1960, a daughter of Arthur Harwood and the late Nyta Harwood. She was raised in Waverly and Athens, Ga., where she graduated from Cedar Shoals High School in 1978. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Georgia, where she was an active member of the Delta Gamma sorority. Her marriage to Geoff Golembiewski brought her the two joys of her life, Elizabeth and Eleanor. She was a member of Tuckston Methodist Church, in Athens.
Kate was a devoted mother, loving sister, and loyal friend. She was a superb cook especially known for her cheesecakes.
Preceding Kate in death were her mother, Nyta Harwood, and sister, Laura Phelps. She is survived by her daughters, Elizabeth Golembiewski, of Iowa City, Iowa, and Eleanor Golembiewski, a student at Wake Forest University; her father, Arthur, of Athens; and her siblings, Donald (Marco Guevara), of Tampa, Fla., John (Kathryn Grossman), of State College, Pa., Ann Harwood-Nuss (Robert Nuss), of Jacksonville, Fla., George (Rita), of Athens, and David (Cindy), of Montgomery, Ala.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Friday, July 25, at Lord & Stephens East Chapel (4355 Lexington Rd., Athens, GA 30605). Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made in Kate's memory to the Athens Area Human Society or a charity of your choice.
