Vaughan Hill Obituary

HILL, VAUGHAN C. A memorial service for Vaughan C. Hill and celebration of his life will be held on Thursday, May 1 at 2:30 at First Presbyterian Church (12th and Alder in down-town Portland). Vaughan died on April 22 at his home in Portland. Vaughan was born on August 12, 1920 in Lebanon, Ind., the son of Chester and Alice Hill. He grew up in Kokomo, Ind., and was extremely proud of his Hoosier heritage. He received his chemi_cal engineering degree from Pur-due University in 1942, where he was a member of Phi Kappa PSI fraternity. He served his country during World War II in the Army Air Corps, assigned mainly in China and India as a part of the ''Hump Operation'' delivering supplies to China. He retired from the service as a Major. After World War II, Vaughan returned to Purdue and received a mas-ter's degree in engineering. He headed west to California and joined Standard Oil Company of California (Chevron), where he spent his entire career in engi_neering design, construction management and management positions. He worked principally in San Francisco, except for two years in India and eight years in Iran. He retired in 1982 and moved to Portland in 1991. Vaughan married Emma Ann Wishart in 1948 and they enjoyed 43 years of marriage until her death in 1991. Vaughan is sur-vived by his daughter Joanna Chattaway (and her husband David) of Sussex, England; his daughter Margaret Noto (and her husband Ingolf) of Portland; his son Jeffrey Hill (and his wife Anne) of Portland; and seven grandchildren (John, Caroline and Luke Chattaway, Torben and Emma Noto, and Chet and Andy Hill). Vaughan was a life-long Presbyterian and he was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Portland. Remem-brances may be made to the mission program of First Pres_byterian Church or Providence-St. Vincent Hospice Program.
