A. Turner Obituary

TURNER, JR., A. FRED, was born on June 15, 1911 in Tampa, Florida to A. Fred Turner and Annie Fulcher Turner. He had two older sisters, Lois and Kathleen and one younger sister Frances. He attended the preparatory school Lee School for Boys near Black Mountain, North Carolina from 1926-29. He led the school in scholarship. He lettered in football, baseball and basketball. From there he went to Southern College, a Methodist school now called Florida Southern in Lakeland. After two years he transferred to Duke University where he graduated with a B.S. in 1932. He entered Duke Medical School in 1932 and graduated with an M.D. degree in 1936. He did his post-graduate surgical training in urology at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati; Medical College of Virginia in Richmond; and Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. He returned to Orlando in the summer of 1940 and entered private practice, but was called to active duty in 1941. He entered the Navy and eventually served as Lieutenant Commander in the South Pacific theatre. During the war he met and then married Mary Jane Erickson on January 2, 1944. With Mary Jane he returned to Orlando in 1945. He returned to private practice in urology where he served as one of the first urologists in Central Florida. He was President of the Medical Staff of Orange Memorial Hospital from 1958- 59, and the President of the Florida Urological Society from 1949-50. He retired from private practice in 1980, but a "physician forever" he returned to practicing urology for the Veterans Administration (VA) from 1982 to 1996 until the age of 85. His wife of 61 years predeceased him in 2002. His son Dr. A. Fred Turner, III and his daughter, Lynn Homan, also predeceased him. He is survived by his son Dr. Erick Turner of Portland, Oregon, and his wife Julie; his daughter-in-law Jean Turner of Cocoa Beach and his sister Frances Price and her husband Dr. C. David Price of Winter Park. He had five grandchildren, Kate Turner, Kevin (and wife Leslie) Turner, Todd (and wife Leslie) Homan, Hayley Turner and Wynne Turner. He was the great- grandfather of Ryan Homan. He is also survived by several nephews and related family members. Dr. Turner was active in the First Methodist Church of Orlando, a member of the Country Club of Orlando, a docent at the Orlando Museum of Science, and, above all, was an avid tennis player. He played until almost 92 years old when macular degeneration forced him to give up the game. Among his wins were the Florida State Father-Son Tennis Tournament with his son Fred in 1960, and men's doubles titles. He was a much loved physician and will long be remembered for his contributions to the welfare of the community. Funeral services will be held at the First Methodist Church of Orlando Saturday, May 20, 2006, 2PM.
