David Hinson Obituary

HINSON, SR., DAVID C., was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Freeman Hinson, Sr. He spent his entire career as a celebrated member of the Volusia County School system. He also coached several sports teams for both Volusia County Schools and in the community. After spending several years teaching in the classroom, David moved into school administration. He served as assistant principal at Taylor Junior-Senior High School in 1977, followed by an assistant principal position at Spruce Creek High in 1980. David was named principal of New Smyrna Beach High School in 1983, where he remained for ten years. He was once honored as Principal of the Year, while serving a five- year term as principal of Spruce Creek High School. In 1998, he was promoted to Area Superintendent of Volusia County Schools. David loved playing tennis, and was an avid fan of The Bethune- Cookman College Wildcats, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and The Orlando Magic. A devout family man, he began hosting an annual Christmas Day family gathering at his home honoring the legacy of his parents; a tradition he intended to continue. He was a member of Stewart Memorial United Methodist Church where he served for many years on the Hospitality Committee. On Friday, August 1, 2003, while returning to his office from a meeting with new teachers in the District, David was tragically taken from our lives. The family and the community have lost a good and faithful servant. David leaves to cherish his memories a devoted wife, Celestine, affectionately known as Sal; five sons, David, Jr. (Lenore), Christopher (Rashida), Tony, Stephen (Rakinya), and Gregory (Kennetha); one daughter, Angela Polite (Eric); two brothers, Freeman W. Hinson, Jr. (Helen) and Frederick R. Hinson, Sr. (Jasmine); two sisters, Rosalind Jones (Julius) and Marilyn Jordan; eight precious grandchildren, Christopher, Jr., Rakeiya, Eric, Jalen, Sydney, Sakiya, Camron, and Aleah; and a host of many more devoted relatives and friends. Calling Hours will be held Tuesday, August 5, 2003, from 4-8PM, at Stewart Memorial United Methodist Church, 300 N. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Daytona Beach, FL. Funeral Service will be held Wednesday, August 6, 2003 at 11AM at the Heyn Chapel, Bethune-Cookman College. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The David C. Hinson, Sr. Scholarship Fund and mailed to The Office of College Advancement Bethune-Cookman College 640 Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Blvd., Daytona Beach, FL 32114. This scholarship will be given to a graduate of a Volusia County school who plans to matriculate at Bethune-Cookman College.
