Richard Northrup Obituary

Richard Harold Northrup, 87, of Midland, noted local Science Professor and Researcher, died peacefully at his home in Midland on Nov. 20, 2015. Born Feb. 7, 1928 to Harold and Esther (Rhoads) Northrup in the parlor of his Grandparent's Family farm in Breckenridge, Mich., Richard would go on to graduate from nearby St. Louis High School. Upon graduation and wanting to serve his country, Richard enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served with distinction in the Pacific theatre during World War II.

Upon his discharge and having successfully completed his tour of duty, Richard returned to Michigan, earning degrees in the Sciences at Alma College, before earning Advanced Masters Degrees in Biology, Genetics and German Studies from Michigan State University. He further was awarded his Doctorate in Genetics from the University of Minnesota to complement his degrees from Alma and MSU. His additional research work and advanced studies at eight of the Big Ten Schools, allowed him to boast of "being able to root for the winning team each and every Saturday."

While well known as a founding Professor of the modern day Delta College in Saginaw, Richard started his Professional Academic career in Spring Lake, Mich., teaching high school science, before starting his most recognized work at Delta College. Richard retired from teaching in 1991 after 42 years of dedicated service to students and faculty alike.

Retirement meant enjoying new activities, those that included golfing, pottery, softball games, traveling, wintering in Florida, veggie gardening at the Patch, Thursday morning breakfast with the Delta retirees, and Sunday morning church and breakfast with friends.

With his passing, Richard is survived by his wife of 30 years, Marcia Northrup; and six children: Mike Northrup, Patricia (Curt) White, Midland, Pam (Renee) Northrup, Essexville, Stephen (Paula) Northrup, Rural Hill, N.C., stepson, Jason (Sue) Kretz, Midland, stepdaughter Lyndsay (Justin) Gleaves, Ashburn Va.; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The family is most honored for the friendship support of Joe Mazanec, Buz McGivern and Rhosan Stryker, and that of the dedicated Midland Hospice staff of Jackie, Deb and Pam for their care and support of Richard during his illness. Your kindness and support are most appreciated.

As were his wishes, Richard has been Cremated. A private celebration of Richard's life by friends and family will be planned.

Dear Northrup Family
Dick left a phenomenal legacy as vet, father, husband, researcher and teacher. It was my privilege to have experienced the low key elegance of this Renaissance man.
