Mary Olive Anderson, 97, of Metropolis, passed away on Feb. 28, 2024. Mary was a lifelong resident of Metropolis, where she dedicated her career to education. After receiving a Bachelor of Science from Southern Illinois University Carbondale and a master's from Murray State University, Mary taught high school Physical Education and English until her retirement from Massac County School District in 1982.
Mary was an avid golfer and a lifetime member of Metropolis Country Club. In her retirement, she enjoyed traveling and exploring new places. She was known for her love of golf and adventure.
Mary will be deeply missed by her nephews and nieces, Robert (Gillian) Anderson, III, of Marco Island, Florida, John (Laurie) Anderson of Loxahatchee, Florida, Linda (Jason) Dennis of Ballwin, Missouri, Lisa (John) Pea of Belleville; eight grandnieces and grandnephews; ten great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews.
She is preceded in death by her father, Robert Anderson, mother, Blanche (Peeler) Anderson; brother, Robert Anderson Jr.; and sister-in-law, Ruth (Dust) Anderson.
Visitation will be held 10-11 a.m. Thursday, March 7, at the Aikins-Farmer-Loftus-McManus Funeral Home, followed by funeral services from 11 a.m. to noon with Mary's cousin, Rev. Robert Souders officiating.
