Mary FREITAS Obituary

FREITAS, Mary
Mary Freitas (Spadaro, Sayed, Isaia), deceased October 18, 2016, Ann Arbor, Michigan, born April 29, 1917 to Tony and Pauline (Mento) Spadaro, in Pennsylvania, one of eight children. Met fellow Rossiter-born Frank Sayed Isaia and married in New Brunswick, New Jersey, in 1935. The Spadaro family moved there in 1927 to open Spadaro's Market, a family run grocery store.
Her new husband's family had settled in Detroit in 1928, where he moved his bride. They prospered and purchased a home in Detroit's Bagley area, raising three boys and a girl. Mary took up hairdressing as a post-children career, and with Frank owned Southfield Barber and Beauty Shoppe for many years. After her husband passed away she moved to West Palm Beach, Florida where some of her sisters and brothers lived. There she met Andre Freitas and were married 29 years before his passing. Mary survived the death of her beloved daughter Patricia in 1997; husband Frank 1978; husband Andre 2013; and is survived by sons Richard (Barbara), John (Karen d.) and Tom (Jill d.; Ruth); grandsons Richard, Michael, Matthew (Robyn), John (Lynne), Dan (Susie), Frank (Lindsey); and granddaughters Bridget (Jake) and Natalie. She has four great-grandchildren Karl, Christian, Dominic and Lucy. Margaret Paladino, a surviving sister, is in West Palm Beach.

I remember visiting Mary and her siblings there in West Palm Beach. This picture was taken in the parking lot out side her favorite diner.

Tom, I remember when Rich and I once joined you and Jill at your parents house for dinner. Your mother made Baked Alaska for dessert. It was outstanding.....and I remember well almost 40 years later. Love and best wishes always, Ellie

I will miss Aunt Mary's love, generosity and zest for life. She was always bustling around the kitchen, preparing delicious foods or cleaning up after all of us. Her famous "biscotti" is the stuff of legends! She shared her St. Joseph's Day fritters recipe and I made them with my dad--"delizioso"! I had the good fortune of visiting her in Florida and she was a wonderful hostess. I am fortunate to have had such a caring aunt. May God's blessings be with all of her family at this difficult time.
