Roswell Schenck Obituary

Roswell Dalley "Sam" Schenck, of Red Bluff, formerly of Albuquerque, New Mexico, passed away on Tuesday, September 12, at the age of 101 years and 8 months, to the day! Ros was born on January 12, 1916 in Highland Park, New Jersey, to Walter and Anna, the third of four children. Siblings were Myrtle Mae (Billie), Walter (Bud), and Robert (Bob). Ros was active in the Baptist Church, including choir, and participated in sports while attending New Brunswick High School.

Ros attended Middlebury College in Vermont, where he played football, but left to join the U.S Navy and World War II. Ros married Helen Miller in 1942. His son, Roswell was born in 1943.
During his enlistment, he served in all major arenas: escorting troop transports to Murmansk, Russia; as Patton's artillery off North Africa; providing coverage for troop landing at Salerno; numerous engagements in the Pacific; and mine-sweeping in Tokyo Bay.

Upon his return stateside, Ros joined the mining business, working for Hercules Powder, Celanese Corp., and U.S. Potash/U.S. Borax & Chemical Co. in Carlsbad, New Mexico. Daughter Margaret Ann arrived in 1954 and the family moved to Los Angeles in 1958.

In 1972, Ros married Marian Albright Ford, and in 1989 moved to Albuquerque, NM, where they enjoyed 25 wonderful years. Ros busied himself building miniature dollhouses and decorative wine-cork clocks, playing golf, and collecting fine wines.

Ros and Marian moved to Red Bluff in 2014, to live close to Marian's daughter and her family.

He is predeceased by his sweetheart, Marian, and his son, Roswell. He will be sadly missed by his daughter Margaret Ann Schenck, Roswell's wife, Judy, and by his four grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren. Marian's children, Susan and husband Scott Isaacson, and John and wife, Cindy Ford have loved him for many years. He is also considered Grandpa Sam to Marian's five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

Ros will be honored with a full military ceremony at the Northern California Veterans Cemetery in Igo, California, on November 6, 2017, followed by a celebration of his remarkable life in Red Bluff.

My tribute to my grandparents Roswell "Sam" Dalley Schenck and Marian Albright Schenck at Sam's service:
Sam is my hero. I am so grateful that I had the pleasure to know him in this life. He gave my grandmother, mom, Margi, Ros Jr. and John the lives and love they needed and deserved. He did not stop there. Sam showed me what it meant to love, what it meant to truly live. To live with your whole spirit, to love and laugh unapologetically, and often. Sam touched every person he met, and he had a special impact on me. We have music in common, and he always reminded me how important it is to hold onto music. For this reason, I will play a tribute to my grandparents. Their lives and their love are legacies, and because of this, I will carry them with me for the rest of my life. Though they were blissfully happy for most of their time together, there were troubles in the beginning. Grandma and Sam held this song close to their hearts, for the times that were hard as a promise to hold each other up. This time is no different; their love for each other, as well as the love they held for others, is a "bridge" over the "troubled waters" ahead, as I miss them on this Earth. Thank you, Sam, for making me laugh, believing in me and setting an example for living for the rest of us. I love you and I will miss you always.

My dearest Sam, you have been and will always be my hero and inspiration in life. You taught me how to live and love, and I will hold onto that forever. Your spirit was loved by so many, and I know you affected every person who had the chance to just have a conversation with you. I will hold you close to my heart dearly, I am grateful I got to spend 20 years with you. I love you so much.

Sam you were one of the most gracious people I have ever met. You shared many wonderful stories and were a man of great character and depth. I feel blessed to have known you even if it was for a relatively short time. Your smile and Grace will never be forgotten.

What a dear friend Ros was to me and our family. We had so many good times together.
One of my favorite memories was his asking about when we where going to celebrate St. Patrick's Day (which was a signal to make a corned beef and cabbage dinner).
May your Memory be Eternal dear friend.
