Fred Sundquist Obituary

FRED LENNART SUNDQUIST Fred Lennart Sundquist passed away suddenly on Monday, January 6, 2014, at Enloe Hospital in Chico, California. Born September 19, 1929, in Oakland, California, to Sigfred and Gunhild Sundquist, Fred was the finest of men and a compassionate friend. Fred grew up in the Westwood area and learned early his lifelong love of the outdoors and fishing. Fred was extremely proud of earning the Eagle Scout award in Boy Scouts and being the first of four generations of Eagle Scouts in the family. A talented basketball player, he attended the College of the Pacific on a basketball scholarship, where he was studying to be a teacher. When called to serve in the Korean conflict, he enlisted in the U. S. Navy and served as a sonar engineer for 3 years on the U.S.S. Halsey Powell, a tender with the U.S.S. Missouri. Upon completion of service, he returned home and went to work for Blackman Lumber Co. in Oakland, where he eventually became the owner. He retired with his wife to his beloved meadow in the mountains where they lived for over 40 years. During many of those years, he worked in real estate in Paradise - Magalia, and loved the people with whom he worked and the friends he made. Fred loved to work in his library and collect his beloved books. Fred is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ann, his daughter Linda (Donald Nassie), grandchildren Amanda Nassie (Adam Bertsch), Samuel Nassie, Jasonn Nassie (Melissa),a son Thomas, sister Eleanor Charles and many friends. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you purchase a copy of your favorite book and donate it to your local library in Fred's name. It would mean so much to him to know there were "more books" out there because of him. Fred's service will be on Wednesday, Jan. 15 at 11 A.M. at Craig Memorial Congregational Church, 5665 Scottwood Road, Paradise, CA. Chapel of the Pines is handling all funeral arrangements.

Linda, My prayers and thoughts are with you and all of the family during this painful time. It is not easy but remembering the person your father was can be very comforting as time goes by. He has left a wonderful legacy in his family and friends and in the life he lived and shared with others.
