AL Woodum Obituary

Al Woodum (Coach) passed away on Thursday, March 18, 2021 after a long battle against cancer. He was born on December 21, 1949 in Sulphur, Louisiana to the late AJ and Polly Woodum. Al lived in various Texas cities before settling in the North Houston area and marrying his late wife of 42 years, Cheryl Woodum.

He earned a BS degree in Kinesiology from Sam Houston State University and spent 38 years of his career teaching and coaching in Conroe ISD. His sports included football, basketball, track and tennis. Al found fulfillment in his career and deeply enjoyed positively influencing the lives of his students. Coach felt blessed to have developed so many friendships and bonds with his colleagues over the course of his career.

In retirement Al enjoyed various activities with his wife, Patricia Woodum. This included volunteering at church to support food drives and assisting for Sunday service by driving golf carts. They were avid travelers and took multiple cruises and international trips. Al and Patricia frequently attended Astros games and enjoyed watching the Dallas Cowboys (America's team, according to Al).

Al loved his friends and family. He was dedicated to his role of husband, father and friend. He is survived by his wife Patricia; his sister, Sherry; children, Stasie Potts and husband Brian, Melissa Cartwright and Allen Woodum; stepchildren, Kevin Culp and wife Mariel, Keri Smith and husband Matthew and Megan Gros; Grandchildren, Trasie, Scott and William Potts, Lily, Sebastian and Finn Cartwright, Jayce and Jocelyn Culp, Marcus and Hannah Smith.

The family will receive friends on Friday, March 26, 2021 from 5:00pm till 8:00pm. Funeral services will be Saturday, March 27, 2021 at 11:00am at Metcalf Funeral Directors with Pastor Derrick Thompson officiating. Interment will be at Conroe Memorial Park Cemetery with a reception to follow.

Both my brother and I and all my friends got to play for Coach at Travis Jr High. He was a fantastic coach, and was pivotal in teaching respect, discipline and getting the most out of everyone.
