Georgie Lantz Obituary

Georgie Lantz, born May 27, 1928 in Guthrie, Oklahoma, died at home on Saturday, May 23, 2015, just a few days before she would have been 87 years old.
She homesteaded in Alaska in 1953. In a car filled with four adults and four children, she traveled from Nebraska to Seattle. The airlines held the flight for them to arrive. The men headed up the Alcan. Later, when she was on the homestead with no electricity and no running water, she would wonder why she packed her iron and ironing board all that distance.
They homesteaded in North Kenai, and Georgie worked in the canneries. One day when they were told the cannery owners did not have the funds to pay them, Georgie and her sister-in-law Sharon went upstairs to the office and told the owner, "We know you have the money and we are not leaving until you pay everyone."
Everyone got paid that day. One day she needed a ride home from her waitressing job. A friend was going the same direction and offered her a ride if she didn't mind the bear on the seat. She thought he was joking but sure enough, a black bear was chained to the seat. She sat close to the door out of reach of the chained bear, because otherwise, it was a long walk home.
She was a tough but loving lady with an infectious sense of humor and a laugh that few people will forget.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Harlan Lantz, her daughter, Kerry Salazar, grandson, Grant Johnson, and great-granddaughter, Emmalyn Hunt.
She is survived by her children, Ronda, Susan and David, and grandchildren, Blaine and Aaron Johnson, Mica Zehnder, Ben McKean, Travis and Abe King, Tonya Broadfoot, Aimee Benavides, Sabrina Hunt, Renee Ma, Stephen Soutas, Dustin Lantz, and their families.

I was just thinking of Aunt Georgie this morning. Such an amazing woman! Aunt Georgie met the challenges of homestead life cheerfully. I remember she wanted to bake a pie. Having no ingredients for a filling, she made "mock apple pie" from soda crackers. It was surprisingly delicious. So many wonderful memories of a strong, loving woman linger. Love you always!

My most sincere condolences for the loss of your loved one. May the God of loyal love comfort you during your time of sorrow. May God's word provide you strength and comfort at this difficult time. "He heals the brokenhearted; and binds up their wounds". Psalms 147:1. "God is our refuge and strength, a help that is readily found in times of distress". Psalms 46:1.

There are so many memories...your mom always accepted me more like another member of the family than a friend. Some of the things that trigger many other memories are: salmon smoking, then being canned; borrowing jars for bee keeping; gardens; the boat; the "new" house; Soldotna creek; the Jeep Wagoneer; the smell of aviation fuel; root beer; your going away party and so many more. There are other memories that led up to courage and strength to change her life in such a positive way, but of all I think her love, laughter and smile are always what I think of first. Love and hugs to all. -Charlotte

My sweet Auntie! I will always treasure memories from the homestead; staying with you all in Anchor Point & coming down with the measles; getting whipped in pinocle (How was it she won ALL the time?!); and I will never forget how lovingly you comforted my brother Steve in the last stages of cancer. Aunt Georgie, you were one remarkable lady! I love you always...

I am so blessed to have had the opportunity to have special moments with Aunt Georgie. I loved hearing her stories of adventures shared with Grandma Sharon and other family members. I am sure Aunt Georgie and Grandma Sharon are keeping everyone in stitches, now that they are together again. I am gladdened for the time spent playing penacle with her and Uncle Harlon. I will miss her witty personality and her warm embrace. I love you Aunt Georgie and I'll miss you, until we meet again. Please give Uncle and Grandma a hug for me.
