Betty Cain Obituary

Betty M. Cain

1923-2016

Betty M. Cain was born an Aussie in the lovely city of Perth, Western Australia in January 1923. Her father a survivor of the Battle of Gallipoli and wonderful mother raised eight children giving them the greatest education of the times and the love from a large family. Betty was an incredible gifted swimmer, she was to represent Australia in the upcoming Olympics, but the war stopped her Olympics hopes. Her main competitor was another American Olympic competitor by the name of Ester Williams, who she competed against in the Pan Pacific games. They became close friends and wrote each other over the years. When World War II came to the shores of Australia every man and woman were drafted into the military in order to protect their country from the invasion by the Japanese. Betty served as a Corporal in the Royal Australian Army Air Corps (RAAAC) now the Royal Australian Air Force, as a radar technician where she met the love of her life, Charles Cain who was serving with the United States Navy flying the Catalina PBY. After a year of courtship they were married in 1944 in Perth and as a war bride she was able to leave Australia along with the love of her life. Betty while pregnant with her son Danny traveled across the Pacific Ocean with her Yank husband on an American troop ship dodging Japanese submarines on their return to begin a new adventure of starting their married life living in Pensacola, Florida. Before retiring, Betty worked at Baptist Hospital's Heart Center working for roughly 30 years and was lovingly known at Baptist Heart Center as one of the three "Golden Girls" i.e., Betty, Louise and Sara her closest friends.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband Charles; and her daughter, Sharon. As the middle child of eight, she is survived by her sisters, Stella and Margret; her son, Dan; daughter in law, Kathy Cain and four grandsons.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thurs., July 21, 2016 at Barrancas National Cemetery where Betty will be laid to rest with her only love Charles E. Cain. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Betty Cain's name to the Navy Seal Foundation or a charity of your choice.
