Eulogy for Sarah-delivered at Memorial Service
SARAH STOKES CALLAHAN WAS BORN ON AUGUST 14, 1964, AND BECAME A STOKES DAUGHTER THREE DAYS LATER AS HER NEW PARENTS WERE CHARLES AND MARTHA STOKES.
HER BIRTH ORDER AS THE YOUNGER TWIN, WAS (ACCORDING TO HER TWIN SISTER, SUSAN,) DECIDED BEFORE BIRTH, AS SARAH WAS ALREADY TELLING SUSAN WHAT TO DO, AND HAD TOLD HER TO CHECK OUT THE WORLD FIRST, TO SEE IF SHE WANTED TO COME OUT. AFTER FIVE MINUTES, SARAH DECIDED TO FOLLOW SUSAN, AND THIS CLOSE SISTER RELATIONSHIP HAS BEEN A SYMBOL OF THEIR BOND FOR 44 YEARS.
SARAH’S LIFE SINCE THAT EVENTFUL DAY IN AUGUST HAS BEEN A LIFE OF A DEEPLY CARING, SELF ASSURED, LOVING PERSON, WHO HAS DEVELOPED A CIRCLE OF FAMILY AND FRIENDS, AND ALWAYS CENTERED AND BASED ON A PERSONAL BOND THAT ONLY IDENTICAL TWINS CAN UNDERSTAND AND DEVELOP.
HER PARENTS, CHARLES AND MARTHA, HAVE HAD GREAT STORIES ABOUT THEIR CHILDHOOD EXPERIENCES, AND THAT UNBREAKABLE BOND, SUCH AS TRYING TO SEPARATE THEM INTO SEPARATE BEDROOMS AND THE CRISIS THAT FOLLOWED, OR TRYING TO DEVELOP A SEPARATE IDENTITY FOR EACH, BUT HOW SARAH CONTINUED TO MAKE DECISIONS, WAS THE INFLUENCIAL TWIN,, AND SUSAN WAS (AND MAY I ADD) CONTINUES TO BE THE FREE SPIRIT.
ONE OF MY MEMORIES HAVING BEEN A CLOSE FRIEND OF THE FAMILY SINCE BEFORE THE TWINS WENT TO SCHOOL WAS THE GREAT BIRTHDAY PARTIES THAT THEY HAD UNTIL THEY WERE MARRIED. AUGUST 14 BECAME A NATIONAL HOLIDAY AT THE STOKES RESIDENCE, NOT TO BE MISSED.
SARAH ATTENDED WOODHAM HIGH SCHOOL, PENSACOLA JUNIOR COLLEGE, AND GRADUATED FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF WEST FLORIDA . HER HIGH SCHOOL YEARS BRING BACK SOME GREAT STORIES, ESPECIALLY IF THERE WAS A PROBLEM AT SCHOOL; THE STATEMENT BY EITHER GIRL WAS “JUST CALL MY DADDY”! (WHO AS WE KNOW WAS THE SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS.)
SARAH DECIDED WITH SOME STRONG INFLUENCEING BY HER MOTHER TO PURSUE A DEGREE IN SPECIAL EDUCATION AND SHE BECAME ONE OF THOSE NATURAL BORN TEACHERS, BEGINNING HER WORK AT PETREE SCHOOL IN 1995, FOCUSING ON WORKING WITH DEVELOPEMENTALY DELAYED CHILDREN AGES 3-5. SHE HAD DONE VOLUNTEER WORK AT THE SCHOOL PRIOR TO THIS, AND KNEW THAT HER TRUE CALLING WAS WORKING WITH YOUNG CHILDREN. SHE TRANSFERRED TO HOLM ELEMENTARY WHEN THE PROGRAM WAS MOVED, AND LATER TO WEISS ELEMENTARY, ALWAYS WORKING WITH THESE YOUNG CHILDREN. IN VISITING HER CLASSROOM, I ALWAYS LEARNED FROM HER, AND SAW IN HER, THE CARING AND KNOWLEDGEABLE EXPERINCE IN WORKING WITH THESE YOUNG CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES. SHE WAS OFTEN REQUESTED AS THE TEACHER BY PARENTS, AS HER REPUTATION FOR MAKING A DIFFERENCE WAS WELL KNOWN.
CERTAINLY HER PERSONAL LIFE AS A MOTHER OF FOUR BEAUTIFUL CHILDREN, SOME NOW ADULTS, INCLUDE BOBBIE, KIMMY, KATIE, AND CARMERON. THEIR STRENGTH AND INNER BEAUTY IS A REFLECTION OF THE STRENGTH AND BEAUTY OF THEIR MOTHER, AS THEY SIT HERE TODAY TO CELEBRATE THAT LOVE AND FAITH OF THEIR MOTHER. LIKEWISE HER HUSBAND, CHRIS, WHOSE LOVE AND PATIENCE, COMPLIMENTED THE LOVE AND SPIRIT OF SARAH, HAVE MADE THIS TRAGIC TIME, A CELEBRATION OF SARAH’S LOVE AND FAITH, FOR HER EXTENDED FAMILY. ALSO THE BOND THAT SHE HAD WITH HER OLDER TWIN SISTER,SUSAN, AND SUSAN’S CHILDREN, WHO OFTEN CONSIDERED SARAH THEIR OTHER MOM, WILL ALWAYS CONTINUE TO PROVIDE A SOURCE OF STRENGTH.
SARAH’S FAITH AND THE KNOWLEDGE OF HER SALVATION, KNOWING THAT SHE WAS GOING HOME TO BE WITH HER MOTHER AND HER LORD, AND THAT PERSONAL PEACE THAT SHE SO WILLINGLY SHARED, HAS MADE HER FAMILY AND FRIENDS ABLE TO DEAL WITH THIS TRAGIC LOSS MUCH EASIER.
SARAH WILL BE MISSED BY MANY, BUT WE HERE AT THIS SERVICE WHO KNEW HER, ARE TRULY COMFORTED BY THE JOY OF KNOWING THAT SHE IS IN A BETTER PLACE, WITH NO PAIN, AND OF COURSE IS WITH HER MOM AND TOGETHER TODAY ARE RECITING TO US THE FOLLOWING:
MAY THE ROAD RISE TO MEET YOU
MAY THE WIND BE ALWAYS AT YOUR BACK
MAY THE SUN SHINE WARM UPON YOUR FACE
THE RAINS FALL SOFT UPON YOUR FIELDS
AND UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN
MAY GOD HOLD YOU AND IN PALMS OF HIS HAND.

We all grieve over the loss of Sarah, and we all grieve for the entire family. And we all feel a special grief for Susan, knowing the unique bond between twins: a shared life and in some ways even a shared identity. And we all hope for solace in the loss of a dearly loved one, remembering that love is stronger death

To the family and friends of Sarah, a former classmate of mine.
Even though I did not know her well in high school, I heard she had devoted herself to helping emotionally handicapped children. I really admired her for that. I'm sure there are a great many she has helped over the years.
Remember, she will always be with you in your hearts.

Sarah worked with me last summer in VBS at our church. Not having been at chuch on WEdnesday evenings (where I would see her working in the kitchen, along side her husband), I only recently learned that her cancer had returned. Before I could go see her, she was gone. She always had a smimle on face.

Dear Family of Sarah,
My prayers for peace are with you. With ESE backgrounds and as fellow survivors, Sarah and I immediately connected in August as employees of SRC. For the brief time we spent together, we shared and prayed for each other and for your family. She had the most wonderful spirit and a genuine kindness for others. She will always be a blessing and treasure to those she touched. May you feel God's loving arms around you and His presence with you.

If We Could Bring You Back Again
If we could bring you back again,
For one more hour or day,
We’d express all our unspoken love;
We’d have countless things to say.
If we could bring you back again,
We’d say we treasured you,
And that your presence in our lives
Meant more than we ever knew.
If we could bring you back again,
To tell you what we should,
You’d know how much we miss you now,
And if we could, we would.

As I go through memories of Susan and Sarah, I recall Episcopal Day School with both- riding on the bus, playing in the courtyard at recess, their laughs at other’s confusion as they switched names for fun: “I’m Susan, she’s Sarah”. Then I realize I don’t remember any other classmates by name from those early years- only Susan and Sarah. That makes them my first memories of classmates. Thank you both.
Sarah, you are missed. My heart-felt prayers go to your family.
Susan, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family as well.

Our hearts and prayers go out to Sarah's family. Although we've not been in contact for a number of years, we still have very fond memories of Sarah. When I(Jan) graduated from college, it was she that got me my first teaching job. We worked together at Merle Norman, she and I were roommates and she and her first husband Mike were dear friends and stood with Randy and me as bridesmaid and groomsman in our wedding almost 24yrs ago. She was a funny, beautiful, sweet and generous person and we will miss her tremendously.

Susan,
I was so saddened to read about Sarah today. I really enjoyed the time we have worked together and visited when I'd see you both over the years. Your family has always held a special place in my heart. I will miss seeing Sarah's smiling face but will only have to see you to be reminded of what a sweet and beautiful person she was to all of us.
While I know your mom would have never wanted Sarah to leave this earth so soon, I know she is happy to be with her again. Hold onto the memories. Please extend to your dad my heartfelt sympathy.

To Sarah's family!!
What a shock to learn of Sarah's passing. It has been years since I have been home to P'cola and yrs since I have seen her and Susan (20th class reunion). Boy did the 4 of us have some fun in our senior yr (Sarah, Susan, myself and Charla). The 4 of us always sat at the same table in Harry Ashler's class. My condolences go out to everyone in Sarah's family. Losing a loved one is never easy. May you all seek spiritual guidance from the Lord above and know that Sarah will be looking down and smiling on you all! My deepest sympathy and I know she will be greatly missed! Keep the memories of her alive forever in your hearts!
