Eugene White Obituary

Dr. Eugene V. White
Berryville - Dr. Eugene Vaden White, 87, of Berryville, Va., died on Friday, December 9, 2011.
Dr. White was born August 13, 1924, at Cape Charles, Va., the son of Paul Randolph and Louise Townsend White. He practiced pharmacy for 48 years, beginning in Luray, Winchester, and Front Royal, Va., and spent the last 42 in Berryville, from where he retired in 1998.
He married Laura Juanita LaFontaine on August 28, 1948 in Richmond, Va.. He was a 1941 graduate of Cape Charles High School and a 1950 graduate of VCU Medical College of Virginia School of Pharmacy. In 1966 he received an honorary Master of Pharmacy degree from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science and in 2001 an honorary Doctor of Science degree from the Shenandoah University Bernard J. Dunn School of Pharmacy.
He served in World War II in the 26th Infantry Division, U.S. Army, and later transferred to the U. S. Army Air Corp Cadet Pilot Training. He received his "wings" in 1945 and was training as a B-25 bomber pilot when the war ended.
He was a member of the Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church, the Berryville/Clarke County Chamber of Commerce, the North Hampton/Cape Charles Chamber of Commerce, American Legion Post #41, and a past member of the Front Royal Lions Club.
In 1960, White, known in pharmacy as a visionary, created the community office practice of pharmacy concept which separated professional services from the commercialized atmosphere that had stultified pharmacy practice. The basis of his concept was his creation of the patient medication profile system, an innovation heralded world-wide in pharmacy as an opportunity for an expanded professional function in clinical pharmacy. It became a legal standard of pharmacy practice when Congress made its use mandatory in the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1990. Pharmacy historians cite this radical event as the turning point of the pharmacy profession to patient-oriented care and many of them refer to White as the "Father of Pharmaceutical Care."
Surviving with his wife, are two daughters, Lynda S. White of Keswick, Va. and Patricia L. White of Berryville, Va.; one sister, Pauline W. Stephens of Fredericksburg, Va.; one brother, Dr. David A. White, Sr. of Richmond, Va.; two grandchildren, Alexis M. Hott, of Berryville, Va. and Kyle B. Hott of Redondo Beach, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Marjorie Dubaj, and nephew, Paul Joseph Dubaj III.
A Memorial Service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 17, 2011 at the Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church in Berryville, Va., with Dr. William K. Dawson officiating. Honorary Pallbearers will be the United Methodist Men of Duncan Memorial, and members of the American Legion, Post 41.
The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday in the Chapel of the Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church in Berryville.
Memorials may be made to the Eugene V. White Scholarship Fund at Shenandoah University Bernard J. Dunn School of Pharmacy, Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church, John H. Enders Fire Co. and Rescue Squad, or the Eugene V. White Scholarship Fund at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Pharmacy.

Because of this great pioneer in pharmacy, I changed my community "drug store" into an office based pharmacy with patient records, in 1971.
He constantly gave me encouragement to develop this concept. My gratitude is endless.
