Exequiel M. Atienza

Virginia Beach - MRC (SW) Exequiel "Ike" Maula Atienza, USN (Ret.) passed away the morning of July 22nd of 2014. He was born on September 4th of 1942 in San Jose, Batangas, Philippines to the late Justo Ona Atienza and Maria Maula Atienza. He enlisted in the US Navy and left the Philippines on February 23rd of 1968. Four years into the Navy he would travel to England to marry his high school sweetheart on January 1st of 1972.

He lived his dream of a good life, a chance to travel to other countries, and financially supported his two sisters and younger brother through college.

His tour of duty included USS Gilmore (AS-16); USS Bryce Canyon (AD-36); SIMA, Pearl Harbor, HI; USS Vulcan (AR-5); Naval Brig, Norfolk; USS Ticonderoga (CG-47); USS Hunley (AS-31); and SIMA, Portsmouth. After 25 years and 9 months in the Navy; he retired Chief Petty Officer, Machinery Repairman. He also worked at Premier Copper and Brass Company for another 12 years.

He is preceded in death by an older brother, Alberto Atienza, and a younger sister, Leonida A. Mistica of the Philippines.

Left to cherish his memories are his wife, Zenaida Abdon Tolentino Atienza, and his three daughters: Emmeline Chang (Kenneth), Exzelle Johnson (Jacob), and Erica Mallin (Aaron). He leaves behind six grandchildren: SierraLynn Johnson, Tyler Johnson, Noah Chang, Owen Chang, Zayden Mallin, and Lukas Mallin. He leaves behind his younger brother, Jose Maula Atienza (Nelia) of the Philippines; younger sister, Liwayway A. Agustin (Sonny) of California; as well as numerous nephews and nieces in the Philippines and Canada.

Ike requested that his remains be cremated and spread in the ocean during his Naval Burial at sea.

The family would like to thank Dr. Mark Fleming and staff; Dr. Donald Lynch; and Dr. R. Givens and staff; Dr. J.D. Miranda and staff; Dr. Behl and staff of Sentara Hospice Home; Batangas Association of Hampton Roads; extended family and friends; and Father Tim Kuhneman for their support and prayers.

There will be a visitation on Thursday, July 24th of 2014 from 6:00pm to 9:00pm at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, 1485 Kempsville Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23464. A mass to celebrate his life will be held on Friday, July 25th of 2014 at 2:00pm at Holy Spirit Parish, 1396 Lynnhaven Parkway, Virginia Beach, VA 23453.
