Dr. Thomas G. Fernando

1945 - 2023

Dr. Thomas Gamini Fernando, 77, sadly passed away after an illness on July 20, 2023, with his loving family by his side. He was born on December 21, 1945, in Sri Lanka to the late William Henry and Viola Margaret Fernando.

Thomas is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Anita Perera Fernando and their children Anne (James), Patrick and Drew (Frank). He is also survived by brothers, Ranjan and Nimal and sister, Padmini. He is preceded in death by brothers, Chitra and Ananda.

Thomas completed medical school in Colombo, Sri Lanka in 1968, followed by postgraduate training in both London, England and Norfolk, VA. He settled in Virginia Beach and worked in nearly every psychiatric facility in the Hampton Roads area during his career. He also built a practice in the Wards Corner section of Norfolk along with his wife who managed the practice. He provided mental health care to the community for 42 years and incredibly, practiced medicine for over 50 years. He raised and educated his three children and built a life surrounded by family, close friends, and colleagues. He was an avid tennis player and golfer. He loved music, film, travel, and walking on the beach. Thomas will be missed by his loving family and friends.
