PEORIA - Harry Schwarz of 98 Leisure World, Mesa, Ariz., formerly of Peoria, passed away Wednesday, April 3, 2013, at Springdale Village, after a short bout with pneumonia.
He and his wife of 65 years, Frances L. Schwarz, who survives him, were full-time residents of the Leisure World community for 36 years, having moved from Peoria, Ill., in 1977.
Harry had a wonderful and active retirement playing golf, traveling, entertaining their many friends, and sharing his love and talent for music as the trombone player in the "Leisure Notes" band for many years.
He was born in Schertz, Texas, on Jan. 16, 1925, the son of Harry and Margaret Schwarz.
During World War II, Harry served proudly aboard the high-speed minesweeper USS Hopkins, which saw combat at Guadalcanal, Guam, Saipan, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa to mention a few. His ship was one of the first to enter Tokyo Bay to clear the way for the U.S. fleet's entry for the signing of the Japanese surrender.
The organizations he had been a part of included TKE fraternity Bradley University, Active Free Masons Peoria Lodge, Knights Templar, Mohammed Shrine Temple, Order of the Red Cross of Constantine, Peoria Consistory, and the Royal Order of Jesters Court 40.
His survivors also include his daughter, Pamela F. Millet of Peoria, Ill.; son Chuck Schwarz and two grandchildren, Erin and Matthew Schwarz of Houston; and brother Vernon Schwarz and wife Yvonne of Kingsland, Texas.
Harry will be truly missed by his family and all who knew him.

Pamela... we were sorry to learn of your dad's passing. Another one of the dear people I was lucky to know as my "Peoria family". I"m glad you don"t have to go through this alone. Kiss your mother for me and give her my best. Call me when you can.

Pam - Don't know if you remember me or not. I played in the Washington Band with your father back in the 1960's. And I recall visiting him at his Bobolink home a few times. I still think of him when I drive by even though Dr. Nichols is living there now. Wanted you to know that I am thinking of you at this time and you and your family are in my prayers.
