GREEN VALLEY - Melvin H. Jacob, 87, of 1296 Jacob Road, Green Valley passed away at 6:41 p.m. Saturday, April 23, 2011, at Mason District Hospital.
He was born July 31, 1923, near Green Valley, the son of Benjamin and Margaret Nannen Jacob. He married Dorothy Gockel on Sept. 10, 1950, in Lincoln. She survives.
He has three daughters, Pamela (Tom) Johnson of San Jose, Sandra (Barry) Gager of Sedalia, Colo., and Mary (Ron) Gilman of Maroa. One son, Mark (Kelly) Jacob of Green Valley, also survives. There are seven grandchildren: Ben and Kate Johnson, Erin, Austin, and Ethan Gager and Sarah and Julia Jacob.
He was preceded in death by one infant son, Richard Jacob.
Melvin graduated from San Jose High School in 1941.
He attended Lincoln College and later was inducted into the U.S. Army during World War II in April 1943. During his time in the service he attended the University of New Hampshire. He served in the Rhineland, Central Europe, and Japanese campaigns during World War II and was awarded two Bronze Stars.
After his discharge from the service in 1946, he returned home to farm and raise livestock in the Green Valley area.
He was a member of the Emden American Legion Post 506 and St. Paul's Lutheran Church near Manito.
He served on the San Jose School Board for many years and was on the Logan-Mason-Menard Regional board of trustees.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 28, 2011, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church near Manito. The Rev. Derek Riddle will officiate. Visitation will be from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Maas Funeral Home in Manito. Interment will be in Mason City Cemetery. The American Legion Post 506 of Emden will conduct military honors following the committal service.
Memorials may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 21189 CR 3300 E., Manito, IL 61546 or to the donor's choice.
