Robert Kendall Obituary

MASON CITY - Robert Lee Kendall, 90, of Mason City passed away on Sunday, Dec. 16, 2012, at his home.

Bob was born on April 28, 1922, in Mason City, Ill., the son of Claude and Edna Folkman Kendall. He married Maxine Thompson on Jan. 25, 1951, in Mason City, Ill. She passed away Jan. 6, 2004.

Bob is survived by his daughter, Karen Lee (Alan) Tucker of Havana; and by his grandchildren, Jeffrey Robert (Robyn) Tucker of Peoria and Jenna Lee Tucker of Peoria. Also surviving is his sister, Edna Mae Hansen of Florida.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Henry Kendall; and his sister, Betty Moehring.

After high school, Bob joined the U.S. Army and served throughout the European Theater with Patton's Army. Among other exploits his group liberated a concentration camp and rescued survivors of the Holocaust.

After the war Bob farmed with his brother, Henry and later worked for the state of Illinois as a highway maintainer.

Bob was an avid fisherman, hunter and most enjoyed attending his grandchildren's ball games. Bob was proud of the fact he received a tryout as a pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1940, but due to the war was unable to attend the camp.

Bob was a lifelong member of the Mason City United Methodist Church, the Mason City American Legion Jackson-Keen Post 496 and an avid reader and regular at the Mason City Public Library.

Bob and Maxine spent many hours with their grandchildren whom they adored and spoiled. Bob will be greatly missed by his daughter, Karen (their weekly lunches); his son-in-law, Alan (their times fishing together); and by his grandchildren. His gardening ability and wealth of fresh produce given to his family and friends will always be remembered. Grandpa, we miss you!

Funeral services for Bob will be Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2012, at the Mason City Cemetery at 10 a.m. Hurley Funeral Home in Mason City will be in charge of the services. Only graveside services will be held with Nash Shawgo officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mason City Library, the Mason City Methodist Church or to a charity of the donor's choice.
