I was Wally's student and then his grad assistant in 1979. I stayed in contact with him all these years and would try to visit him when I would come down for the Shakespeare Fest. It was always interesting conversations. He was one of the most intellectually curious people I've known.
He used to go to KKK and other extremist meetings with a tape recorder hidden under his coat. He had a huge collection of tapes. My favorite story is that he was at a right-wing meeting, I think the speaker was George Lincoln Rockwell, wearing his recorder. Recently at these meetings, he had starting to notice this one guy at various meetings who kept checking him out. After the speech, the guy approached him and started asking him some vailed questions. Then the guy said he didn't think Wally belonged here. Pretty scary until he tells Wally that he's undercover FBI.

Thirty years ago Professor Mead travelled with a group of students for a semester long study abroad experience in London. As I told my friends, he was wicked smart and I was not a very good undergraduate student. I never got to apologize to him for being a poor student and when your professor writes the book you should really read when he assigns it.
One of the coolest memories I have of Prof. Mead was traveling to the USSR during Perestroika. Another student and I met some Russian black market guys in Leningrad and he joined us when we all went out to dinner. It was the first time that I had ever seen shot glass as part of a "fancy" dinner. The guys wanted us to pay them in US dollars and they'd pay the bill in rubles. He put his foot down and said no, we'd all pay in rubles. Talk about an important education for us at 20 years old. That trip has long effected my life professionally and personally. I am sorry I just never got to tell him. I am sorry I never got to reconnect with him. Godspeed.

Norma, Warne & Wayne and Families,
We were very shocked and saddened by hearing the news of Wally passing away. His intellect and clever humor will be missed by all who knew him. We first became acquainted over 25 years ago when we began our study of Mead genealogy. There must have been a huge reunion awaiting your arrival.
