Yvonne Shurtz Obituary

FOREST CITY - L. Yvonne Shurtz, 85, of Forest City, Ill., passed away peacefully Friday, March 6, 2015, at Grand View Alzheimer's Special Care Center, with loving family by her side.

Yvonne was born Oct. 4, 1929, in Christopher, Ill., to Tracy Baxter Fomby and Hazel Lillian (Galloway) Fomby. She married Marion Ray Shurtz on Feb. 22, 1948, in DuQuoin, Ill. He preceded her in death on July 24, 2014.

Surviving are her eight children, Dale Shurtz of Forest City, Gale (Laura) Shurtz of Manito, Susie (Jim) Armstrong of East Peoria, Sally (Ron) Walker of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., Lisa (Paul) Sutherland of Olney, Karen Linsberg of Braden River, Fla., Kathleen (Terry) Benedict of Farmington and John (Alison) Shurtz of Aurora; a very special addition to his family, Pearlie Harris; 18 grandchildren, Jeremy Shurtz, Katie (Steve) Prytiscosh, Quinn Schad, Danessa (Cliff) Quine, Mindy Armstrong, Corey Armstrong, Amanda Nudelman, Danny Nudelman, Sean (Jessica) Sutherland, Tori (Andy) Walden, Kalin (Greg) Linsberg, Karly Linsberg, Kasey Linsberg, Donnie (Jessie) Malmquist, Jaime (Andy) Weilacher, Steve Malmquist, Joe Shurtz and Ruth Shurtz; 20 great-grandchildren; and siblings, Gwen Sue and Barbara Sue Burke.

She was preceded in death by her stepsister, Betty Ann; and sister, Audrey Rae.

Yvonne was a nurse at Marshall Browning Hospital in DuQuoin until she married, then worked for G.E. in her early married years, followed by 20 years as regional manager for Tri-Chem. She then opened Yvonne's Me'Tier, a porcelain and ceramic shop specializing in dolls.

Yvonne never met a stranger and readily welcomed anyone in need to the family table. She spearheaded several programs to help others, including sending toys and cloth diapers to Albania through missionaries. She incorporated her love of music and crafts into her church work. Serving as music director, as well as pianist, she also supervised crafts each summer for vacation Bible school. The last church she attended was Valley Chapel in Green Valley.

She was a high energy, vibrant personality. She will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by all who love her.

Services will be held Wednesday, March 11, at 10:30 a.m. at Maas Funeral Home in Manito. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today, March 10, also at Maas Funeral Home. Burial will be at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield at 1 p.m., immediately after services.

Aunt Yvonne was a very special person, her personality always sparkled. Some of my fondest memories are summers visiting at her and Uncle Rays farm. We always had the best time every time. I will miss them both tremendously.

Aunt Yvonne was such a fun, high energy, silly person that I'm glad some of her personality rubbed off on me. She will be missed, but will treasure the times I spent at the house doing crafts and tending animals.Love you Aunt Yvonne.Prayers for the Family.
