Geoffrey Landis Obituary

Geoffrey Budd Landis JANUARY 19, 1952 JANUARY 11, 2009 Geoffrey Landis died in his home in Santa Fe after a valiant struggle with ALS. He was born in Gladwyne, PA, the son of Elizabeth Hatton Landis and Robert M. Landis, both accomplished attorneys. He attended the Booth School in Bryn Mawr and Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, PA.  Geoffrey first visited family friends in Santa Fe as a teenager and decided then to settle in New Mexico as soon as he could, first attending graduate school in Art History at UNM and going on to share his art and his life with his many friends here. Geoffrey loved the canyons and mountains of the Southwest and his paintings of Rio Grande textiles which he called "Rio Grandescapes" became iconic images and unique depictions of the landforms around him, and they led him to great success as a fine artist.  He was also a creator of beautiful spaces, a superb chef and consummate host, and a kind and generous friend.  His large parties and small gatherings brought together diverse and interesting people for deep conversation, heartfelt laughter and the kindling of many lifelong friendships.  He touched everyone he knew with his love of beauty both through his artistic career and his many volunteer activities. He co-founded the Santa Fe Vipassna Sangha and sponsored numerous retreats in Northern New Mexico.  He and his partner, Stefan Dobuszynski founded Jubilados, a non-profit organization with the purpose of creating an affordable retirement community based in ecumenical spiritual beliefs and the practices of permaculture.  He also contributed to the Santa Fe community through community organizing with Las Tres Villas and other organizations, meditation practices and support for people living with AIDS.  He often chose to assist these important causes anonymously and was grateful to know one person's efforts can make a difference.  Geoffrey was predeceased by his parents, and his brother, Christopher.  Survivors include his partner of over 14 years, Stefan Dobuszynski and Stefan's daughters, Leila and Jade; his nephew, Christopher Hatton Landis, Jr.; numerous McCoy cousins; a loyal assortment of devoted and loving friends including his former wife, Laurel Seth; other members of his Share the Care network and Sangha; and two beloved corgis. In Geoffrey's memory, take a walk in a beautiful place, share a good meal and conversation with friends or donate to the non-profit of your choice in his memory.  A memorial celebration will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 21, 2009 at Sunrise Springs in La Cienega.

Geoffrey was a dear friend of mine with whom I shared many great moments all throughout my years in New Mexico until I left the country in '90 to live overseas. Even then we kept up by email and it was with great sadness that I learned of his death from Laurel. He had fought his illness so valiently it seemed certain he would overcome with the strength of mind, spirit, and body that enabled him to go trekking in Nepal even thiough he was not well. Aside from being a great artist and a person of consumate taste, he was a true and wonderful friend who enriched the lives of everyone who knew him. He lives on in my memories of all the times we spent together in Santa Fe, that most magical of places.
