Geraldine Fields-Dillard Obituary

Geraldine Fields-Dillard, 84, of Gary, died Dec. 27, 2022.

A native of Gary, Geraldine was a long-time employee of the Post-Tribune. Geraldine graduated from Froebel High School in 1955. She studied journalism at Indiana University Northwest and Calumet College. She joined the Post-Tribune in the mid-1960s as a secretary. In 1972, Geraldine became one of the first black journalists in the newsroom when she became editor of The Neighbors section. She retired in June 2011. Geraldine was a mentor for the next generation of Black women in the Post-Tribune. They recalled her warm and protective presence in the newsroom. She was a devoted member of her church, Bethlehem AME Zion. She was also an avid bridge player. She is survived by her son, Terrence (Brenda) Fields; Sister Evelyn Hytche, three grandchildren and five great grandchildren and one great grandson. She was preceded in death by husband, Charles "Chuck" Dillard. A memorial service will be announced at a future date.
