Edward Stone Obituary

EDWARD R. STONE, 90, OF EAST COVENTRY Edward R. Stone, 90, husband of the late Evelyn (Wronker-Flatow) Stone, of East Coventry, passed away at his home on Friday, May 4, 2012. The son of the late Rear Admiral Charles E. Stone and Mary Bernice (Clark) Stone, Ed was born in Oakland, California, but grew up in Hawaii. He was employed as a civilian ship builder during the attack at Pearl Harbor. Ed also served in the United States Army, stationed in Korea, before the Korean War. He was a graduate of the University of Michigan and Columbia University. He received his Waldorf School teaching credentials at Emerson College in England. Ed swam the backstroke, butterfly and crawl for the United States Olympic team during the 1948 Summer Olympics, making it to the finals. He also held three world records in diving. Mr. Stone was employed as a teacher for The Kimberton Waldorf School and The Hill School. A consummate teacher and storyteller, Ed also taught in Israel, England, California and Michigan. Mr. Stone is survived by his daughters, Fiona Michaela Havlish, of Boulder, Colorado, and Michele Elizabeth, wife of Thomas Schnabel, of Rochester, Vermont, and five grandchildren, Sean Bitterman, Lea Bitterman, Michaela Havlish, Tyler Schnabel and Eric Schnabel. Ed's funeral service with eulogy will be held on Sunday, May 6, 2012, at 3 p.m. at the Rose Hall, Camphill Village Kimberton Hills, 1601 Pughtown Road, Kimberton. The Act of Consecration of Man for the one who has died will be celebrated in the Christian Community Devon Chapel, 212 Old Lancaster Road, Devon, PA, on Saturday, May 12, 2012, at 9 a.m. Memorial Contributions may be made in Ed's name to The Christian Community, 212 Old Lancaster Road, Devon, PA 19333. Arrangements are being handled by the Campbell-Ennis-Klotzbach Funeral Home, Inc. Condolences may be offered online at www.PhoenixvilleFuneralHome.com
