Carol Ries Obituary

Carol Ries, age 64, of 915 Highland Avenue, Iowa City, died peacefully Saturday, March 11, 2006, at her home surrounded by her family following a courageous battle with lung cancer.
Funeral services will be held 10 am Tuesday, March 14, 2006, at St Mary's Catholic Church, Iowa City. (Sunday parking ordinance will be in effect for streets around the church). Burial will be in the St. Stanislaus Cemetery, rural Hills, Iowa. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm Monday at Gay and Ciha Funeral Home where a parish vigil service will be held at 7 pm. Memorials may be given to Iowa City Hospice or the Veteran's Hospital Oncology Department, Iowa City in Carol's memory. Carol was born October 1, 1941, in Iowa City, the daughter of Melvin "Cap" and Loretta (Yeggy) Kral. She was a member of the first high school class to graduate from Regina High School in 1959. Carol married John Ries December 26, 1956, at St Joseph's Catholic Church, Hills, Iowa. Carol was a registered nurse at Veterans Hospital in Iowa City.
Carol was an avid gardener and loved to work on crafts. Carol enjoyed mushroom hunting in the spring and traveling. She was a devoted wife, mother grandmother, daughter and sister. Carol had a positive attitude and showed a lot of people how to live while battling her cancer.
Carol's family includes her husband, John; her children, Debbie and her husband, Jerry Vahl of Marion and their children, Macaela and Maddisen; Lynn and her husband, Dan Ludolph of Peoria, Illinois and their children, Rashelle and Kelsie; and Jeff and his wife Elaine of Polk City, Iowa and their children Zachary, Adam, Emily and Reagan; her mother, Loretta Kral of Iowa City and a sister Jean and her husband, Larry Gritton of Manchester, Iowa.
Carol was preceded in death by her father, 1 sister, Joyce and 1 brother, Donald.
Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City is caring for Carol's family and her services.
