Dolores Scanlon Obituary

Dolores V. E. Scanlon

Vestal - Dolores (Dee) Scanlon (78) passed away Jan 5 at Willow Point Nursing Home after an extended illness.

She was predeceased by her parents James and Doris Van Etten, and her sister Nancy Van Etten.

She is survived by her husband of over 59 years, James of Vestal; her daughter and son-in-law Debora and Craig Hatton of Cape Elizabeth, ME; her son James (Jay) Scanlon of Union Springs, NY; her sons and daughters-in-law, John and Leann Scanlon of Cortland, NY and Gregory and Melanie Scanlon of Vestal, NY; 13 grandchildren: Colman, Erin, Dana, Sydney, Colby, Gwyneth, Boden, Sterling, Shelby, Aidan, Conor, James and Kayleen; 1 great-grandchild: Olin; and her sister Joyce Van Etten of Henrico, VA.

While raising her 4 children, Dee worked as a registered nurse, earned her bachelor's degree at the University of Vermont, and regularly volunteered with organizations such as the Red Cross, Cub Scouts, and the United Methodist Church in Burlington VT. After moving to Vestal, she joined the Southern Tier Geology Club where she served in several leadership positions. She was an outgoing and caring person who loved helping other people whether it was through her profession as a nurse, as a certified alternative healer, or through her business, the Crystal Resource Center. As the founder and owner, she spent over 30 years teaching others while at the same time developing her own spirituality from her Native American heritage. She had a love of all animals, taking in strays, rescue animals and raising akc registered huskies.

Our family would like to give special thanks to all the health care professionals at The Hearth at Castle Gardens Memory Care where she resided for 4 and a half years. Also, thanks to Lourdes Hospital for her recovery from 7 weeks of COVID-19 and most recently to the Willow Point Skilled Nursing Home for their excellent hospice care. She will be remembered and missed by all.

In lieu of the normal funeral services, a celebration of her life will take place at a future time and place when it can be safely done.

Expressions of sympathy in her memory may be made to The Alzheimer's Association and/or the Vestal United Methodist Church.

Mr. Scanlon,
So sorry to just hear of Dee’s passing. I enjoyed caring for her so much at Keepsake Village. I loved her smile, sweet nature, and silly sense of humor that would shine through despite her struggles. I hope you are well. Melanie

We always enjoyed having conversations with Dee when she was walking the dog or when she was taking care of the horses. She enjoyed stopped by while Brian was creating his sculpture in our garage. She was a special woman and made the world a better place.
