Edna Lockwood Obituary

Lockwood, Edna L.

Afton: Edna Louise Lockwood died Friday Sept. 12, 2014 at her home. She was born November 11, 1923 in Hanna City, Illinois, the daughter of Hazel and Edgar Angle. They migrated to New York during the Great Depression. Edna married Johnny Lockwood and together they raised five children. Edna had not been able to graduate from high school when a teenager so when she was 38 she returned to take regular classes and graduated from Afton Central School with her class two years later. Not being satisfied with that achievement, she went on to the Decker School of Nursing to become an LPN. But even this was not enough of a challenge for her. Edna then proceeded to attend BCC and graduated in 1972 with an Associate's Degree in Nursing. After trying hospital care, she found her true niche at Amphenol in the First Aide Department where she worked for many years. There was never a dull moment in her life but when she found time she wrote a memoir about growing up during the

Great Depression and had it published. "Remembering Hazel and Ed" was one of the greatest achievements and satisfactions of her life. Edna had a deep love and concern for all animals and among many projects to aid animals she helped friends and strangers to spay and neuter their pets. Edna was predeceased by her husband, Johnny and her son, Mickey, also by her granddaughter, Annie Lockwood and her great-grandson, Cameron Mika. She leaves behind her remaining children: Eileen Rowe of Afton and her son-in-law Jack Rowe of Staunton, Virginia, Wayne Lockwood of New Smyrna, Florida, Glenn and Suzanne Lockwood of Afton and Shawn and Alecia Lockwood of Wadlaey Alabama, also 16 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. She leaves behind also her only remaining sibling Lillian Moore of Deposit; and many, many relatives and friends. And finally, her constant companion, guardian angel and soul mate, her beloved dog, Chelsea.

Memorial Services will be held at St. Ann's Episcopal Church, Afton on Wed. at 11 a.m. Rev. David Hanselman, Rector will officiate. Burial will be in Nineveh Presbyterian Cemetery on Wed. at 2 p.m.. The family will receive friends at St. Ann's Episcopal Church on Wed. from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to service. To keep with her tradition of helping animals, she has asked that any remembrances of her be given in donations to the Delaware Valley Humane Society 101 Main Street Sidney, NY 13838. Edna was an original in every way, and I will treasure her friendship always. Her life was so rich and full, and she lived it so well, overcoming heartbreak and great loss with grace, humor, and a no-nonsense kindness, which gave her a true wisdom, an understanding of the human spirit, how it endures in all adversity, which she celebrated in her work. I think I thought she would live forever, and I know her spirit will. I know she is writing very well indeed in heaven . . .

I graduated with Ms. Lockwood in 1965 and remember her fondly. An inspiration to me defining what all woman can achieve. I had a family, an education, and a career because of women such as Ms.Lockwood. My deepest sympathy to her family.
