Edward Bernhauer Obituary

Edward J. Bernhauer

Endwell - Edward John Bernhauer of Endwell, NY, beloved father, uncle and grandfather, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 13, 2021 at the age of 92. He was pre-deceased by his parents Edward and Louise Bernhauer, his brother Herbert Bernhauer, his brother-in-law Rev. Nicholas Rossello, and his cherished wife of 45 years, Genevieve. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Ed and Brenda, his grandchildren Lucas and Melanie, his nephews Richard (Lyndie) Bernhauer and Herbert Bernhauer, his godson Jakob Bernhauer, his niece Barbara (Nicholas) Sakelariou, his great-nephews Richard Bernhauer, Jr. and Kosta Sakelariou, his great-niece Krystal Bernhauer, and many treasured friends. After coming to this country from Austria, Ed's parents settled down in Johnson City where Ed was born and raised with his brother Herb. After graduating from JC High School in 1947, he attended Albany College of Pharmacy and was the chaplain of his Kappa Psi fraternity and the president of the student American Pharmaceutical Association. Ed's college years also began his two life long interests… having the perfect party and being the best "Irish tenor". After graduating in 1954, Ed returned home and worked at E.J. Medical Center where he met the love of his life Genevieve. They were married in 1956 and started the West Corners Pharmacy in 1957 that became a hallmark of the community for 21 years. While there, Ed engaged in numerous activities including being a member of the Elks Lodge (B.P.O.E.), charter president of the Lions club, founding sponsor of the West Corners Little League, and a volunteer fireman for the West Corners Fire Department where he was fire commissioner for a year. Ed and his wife even owned Orlando's restaurant in West Endicott for five years. After owning several other pharmacies in the area, Ed and Gen's son Eddie was born in 1974 and soon after they moved to the town of Maine where they started the Maine Pharmacy that became the place to go for help or hobnobbing for the next 13 years. Ed also was a past president of the Maine Kiwanis Club and member of Most Holy Rosary Church for 22 years. Ed enjoyed gardening with his father-in-law and his love of singing made him an avid fan of the Three Tenors. He also enjoyed going to events at the German Picnic Grounds, however, most of his free time was spent hosting family and friends where his thunderous laugh, cold manhattans and well developed sense of humor brought a smile to everyone's face. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends and customers, all remembering him for his limitless compassion and willingness to help no matter what the problem or need was. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday (7/23) at Noon at the Church of the Holy Family, 3600 Phyllis Street, Endwell. The family will receive friends at the church from 10:30 am until the time of the Mass. The burial to follow at the convenience of the family. Expressions of sympathy in Ed's memory may be made to Mercy House of the Southern Tier, 212 N. McKinley Ave., Endicott, NY 13760.

Dear Ed and family, you are in my thoughts and prayers. Your dad sang happy birthday to me back in April! I did not know it was your dad until I saw his name on The Father's Day picnic list. I saw that it said Edward Bernhauer, and I thought maybe it was your dad. I was downstairs, and asked him if he lived in Maine and if he had a son named Ed. He said yes! What a small world. I would go downstairs occasionally and say hello to him. I am at Riverview after a couple neck surgeries. I know that he is in Heaven with your mom!

I am sorry to hear of Ed's passing. He was such a nice man who truly cared about the people in the community. He and my father were friends. Ed provided solid advice and made special blends of cough syrup that sent the cough into the hills. Our family will always be grateful for his kindness. God bless.

Ed was a great guy - always jovial and generous as hell. He and my dad went to college together and were in Psi Kappa Psi together. Dad leased the Medical Center Pharmacy from Ed in the 60's and 70's until his death in 1973. Ed always kept a distant eye out for me after that. I had the pleasure of taking him to dinner at the Whole In The Wall Restaurant a few years back. Grateful for that time.

I remember Ed with a great respect. Growing up in West Corners, if you got a rash or anything , you would go with Mom down to Ed's "to see if he had something to help" You'd get the look and he would appear with some magic potion and you were on your way to wellness..... rip
