Reed Stout Obituary

Reed Albert Stout  Reed Albert Stout passed away in Salt Lake City, Utah on Thursday, August 22, 2002 at age 90. He was born in Mt. Pleasant, Utah on December 14, 1911 to Albert LeRoy and Mabel Goates Stout. He received his elementary education in Brigham City and Salt Lake City where he graduated from East High School. In 1933 he graduated from the University of Utah. He then moved to Washington D.C. where he was employed by the Reconstruction Finance Corp., and attended law school, where he graduated from The George Washington University School of Law in 1937. Upon receiving his law degree he was employed as an attorney by the Aluminum Company of America in New Kensington and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Kansas City, Missouri and Los Angeles, California. From 1947 until 1980 he practiced law in Los Angeles as a partner with the law firm of Lawler, Felix and Hall specializing primarily in antitrust and corporate law. He was a Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers and was admitted to practice in the District of Columbia, the State Bar of California, various U.S. Courts and administrative bodies and was a member of the Los Angeles County Bar Association. Following retirement he and Eunice moved to Seven Lakes Country Club in Palm Springs. He was a High Priest in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. On August 1, 1941 he married Eunice Ryberg, daughter of Charlotte and Eric W. Ryberg, in the Salt Lake  Temple.  From 1946 to 1980 he lived in San Marino, California. While there he was given access to the Huntington Library and Art Gallery collections of diaries, manuscripts and publications concerning the early days of the Mormon Church. With these he conducted research, including editing the autobiographies of his great-grandfather Hosea Stout, who had been Chief of Police, a Colonel and acting Brigadier General in the Nauvoo Legion, and was Attorney General of the Territory of Deseret. He especially enjoyed being with his family and friends at his summer home on Lake Hebgen, near West Yellowstone, Montana. He loved to travel and was an honorary member of the Centurion Club having been to over 120 different countries. He is survived by his three children, Reed R. (Jane) Stout, Cerritos, California; Elizabeth Arnell and Charlotte (Dennis) Doman both of Salt Lake City; 10 grandchildren, two great- grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Eunice, two brothers, Clair LeRoy Stout and Joseph Harvey Stout, and son-in-law J. Hal Arnell. Funeral services will be Tuesday, August 27th, 12:00 noon in the Larkin Mortuary Chapel, 260 East South Temple, where friends may call Monday evening 6-8 p.m. and on Tuesday from 11-11:45 prior to the services. Interment will be at the Salt Lake City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CareSource Hospice.
