W. Ben Sherwood
of Vestal
(1920 - 2006)W. Ben Sherwood, 85, of Vestal, died April 8, 2006 of complications following surgery. He practiced law in Broome County since 1949, most recently associated with his son, Michael, at Sherwood and Sherwood, PC, Vestal, N.Y. Mr. Sherwood served as attorney for the Vestal Central School District for more than two decades. With his wife of fifty-eight years, Ellen Delfs Sherwood, he had nine children: Michael Sherwood, Vestal, Susan Sherwood, Binghamton, Sarah Pinfold, Southwald, England, Jeffrey Sherwood, Takoma Park, Md., Candace Havens, Issaquah, Wash., Cynthia Evans, Fanwood, N.J., Matthew Sherwood, Binghamton, Jill Mirabito, Apalachin and Dr. Peter Sherwood, Huntington, N.Y. He is also survived by his brother, Robert Sherwood, Ashaway, R.I.; daughters-in-law, Nancy Hoy Sherwood, Vestal and Christine Mah Sherwood, Huntington, N.Y.; a life partner, Timothy Morris, Takoma Park, Md.; and sons-in-law, Roger Pinfold, Jeffrey Havens, Robert W. Evans II and James A. Mirabito. He is further survived by nine grandchildren, Michael Patrick Sherwood, Elizabeth A. Sherwood, Allison P. Sherwood, Anne S. Mirabito, Katherine D. Mirabito, Robert W. Evans III, Benjamin S. Evans, Christopher S. Havens and Jennifer L. Havens. Mr. Sherwood attended Hamilton College and graduated from Cornell Law School in 1948. He was awarded five battle stars while serving in a WWII anti-aircraft battalion under General Patton in Europe. He was past-president of the New York State School Attorneys Association; Chinese Art Society, Binghamton; and Genegantslet Lake Association, McDonough, N.Y. He was an avid skier who did not leave the slopes of Greek Peak and Taos until the age of eighty-three. An accomplished watercolorist, he studied with Paul Elliott and Ruby Wang, Binghamton, and Bill Stewart, Taos, N.Mex.
Calling hours will be held Wednesday, April 12, 2006 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Barber Memorial Home, 428 Main Street, Johnson City, followed by a memorial service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Vestal Dollars for Scholars, P.O. Box 959, Vestal, N.Y. 13851.
