Maureen McCarthy Obituary
November 18, 1940 - February 23, 2023
Maureen Ann McCarthy, 82, passed away peacefully on February 23, 2023. She was born to Kathleen and Norbert McCarthy on November 18, 1940, in Rochester, NY and grew up in upstate New York surrounded by her loving family.
After graduating from Potsdam State College in Potsdam, NY, she moved to California in 1962. She furthered her education over the years with masters degrees in math and counseling. She had a lengthy career as an educator, teaching mathematics for more than 20 years at Sonora High School and then moving to Santa Rosa to continue her career as a math instructor at Santa Rosa Junior College, finally retiring in 2018. She loved her students and worked diligently to share her love of math and help her students in moving toward life goals.
Maureen was a beloved daughter, sister, aunt and friend. She had many fur babies over the years and was dedicated to giving them the best possible life.
Maureen leaves brother Dan (Jackie) McCarthy of Sacramento, sister Pat McCarthy Hall of Santa Rosa and many nieces and nephews. She was pre-decreased by her parents and brother Tom McCarthy.
At Maureen's request, there will be no services.

I've known Maureen since I arrived at SRJC, often before her evening classes. She had excellent rapport with students and held high expectations for them. I learned many tips from Maureen, including using a seating chart to help remember students' names, and hauling a rolling cart to save my back. Her wit and dedication will be greatly missed.

I shared an office in the SRJC math department with Maureen for several semesters in the few years before she retired. I really enjoyed her as a colleague and friend. We shared discussions about teaching, health, her dogs and more during our office overlaps. Her TV series recommendations were the best.
There was some essential spirit in Maureen that was sharp, lively, and witty and made me laugh. I missed her when our schedules changed and she retired. I am sorry to hear that she is gone.

I met Maureen as an adjunct math instructor at SRJC. I had just started and she was a giving mentor--swapping stories, encouraging, sharing curriculum. She made me feel like I was part of the team.
