Thomas Newnam Obituary

Newnam, Thomas, - 34, of Ocean City, Thomas Newnam, beloved son, brother, cousin, nephew and friend was born on December 28, 1987 in Somers Pt and grew up in Ocean City near the ocean that he loved. He attended St.Augustine Regional School in Ocean City and St.Augustine Preparatory School, graduating in 2006.Thomas became a proud "Fighting Irish", graduating from University of Notre Dame with a degree in computer engineering, and continued his education at Columbia University to prepare for a career in medicine. His dream was to be a doctor.

Thomas loved computers, numbers, working out, swimming and working on the OC beach patrol through high school and college. Tom was a competitive swimmer, and enjoyed the camaraderie of close friends on the Ocean City C Cerpant team, continuing with the St.Augustine prep swim team as a member of the winning State Championship team. Thomas earned two black belts in karate and enjoyed the discipline of the sport.

As a young boy, Tom had an insatiable curiosity and often looked at things from a different perspective. He would look for patterns, add up the hymn numbers on the wall of the church in his head for fun, make mazes with marbles and balls that traversed the house, look for the pathways in the miniature golf games instead of hitting the ball, and played drums with any stick that could be found nearby as a young child. Tom was introduced to computers when they first became common in households, and quickly became the fixer of all the computer glitches in the house as a young teen. Tom had a head full of details. I would often ask him "How do you know that?" Phone numbers, credit card numbers, dates, and codes. He could do calculations in his head faster than we could bring out a calculator. And he enjoyed it.

Tom loved his family. He loved our tradition of family birthdays at restaurants, family vacations and any kind of exotic food. Tom spent his childhood swimming and surfing with his brothers and sister. He taught Emily to walk, practicing with her against the wall over and over. When she came home from the hospital as a newborn, Tom sang the song Emily to her in his lap. He loved playing video games with his brothers Alec and Sam, and spent many happy hours in the ocean with all of them, surfing and swimming.

Tom is survived by his mother Mary Lou, his sister Emily and brothers Alec and Sam. He is predeceased by his father William. In addition, he will be sorely missed by his extended family and by all those that have loved him.

Mary Lou I am so sorry about Tom. He was a wonderful young man to have in music class. Always respectful and eager to learn, he would "police" the other students so we could get things accomplished. We need more people like Tom indeed.
