GIBBONS, EDWARD V., Ph.D.
76, a Smithfield resident for 44 years, passed away Monday, September 18, 2017. He was the beloved husband of Susan T. (Donohue) Gibbons. Born in Lyons, NY, he was the son of the late Dr. Richard V. and Mary A. (Norton) Gibbons. Dr. Gibbons was a Chemist and Production Manager, Remazol Dyes, with the Celanese Corp. of Coventry for 25 years. Dr. Gibbons received his BA degree in biology from University of Buffalo and his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from Fordham University in New York City. He was a communicant of St. Philip Church, a member of the St. Philip Adoration Society, a dedicated volunteer at St. Edward's Food Pantry, Providence and a member of the American Chemical Society. Edward passed on his passion for science to his four daughters, who all pursued degrees and careers in scientific disciplines and teaching. In addition to his wife of 48 years, he is also survived by his daughters, Ann T. Gibbons Willauer, Beth E. White, Erin R. Gibbons, and Colleen P. Sobota. He was the proud Papa of Timothy, Abigail and Samantha Willauer, Olivia Sobota and Jameson Edward White. He was the father-in-law of Jason Sobota, Brian White and Matthew Willauer. He was the brother of the late Richard T. Gibbons and Barbara Arnitz.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 24, 2017 from 4-7pm at the TUCKER-QUINN Funeral Home, 643 Putnam Pike (Rt.44) Greenville, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30am Monday, September 25, 2017 in St. Philip Church, 622 Putnam Pike, Greenville. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Edward Food and Wellness Center, 1001 Branch Ave., Providence, RI 02904 will be appreciated.
