SMART, JEAN F. (HERDE)

Smart, her husband of fifty-nine years. She was the daughter of the late George Fitchette Herde and Mary Elizabeth (Woodworth) Herde.
She is survived by her children, Howard R. "Buzz" Smart, and his wife Joanne, of Wakefield, Roberta S. "Bobbie" Cox, and her husband Vernon, of Sanford, ME, Harold R. "Harry" Smart, and his wife Linda, of Portsmouth, and Andrew D. Smart, and his wife Christina, of Raleigh, N.C. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Alison, Keaton, Christopher and his wife Katie, and Shanna; and her great grandchildren, Deston, Devon, Tadon and Layla; her sister, Marjorie H. Roberts of Hemet, CA; and many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Grace H. Hatfield, Byron E. Herde and Manuel F. Herde.
Jean was a graduate of George Washington University, and worked as a Physical Education Teacher in the D.C. area, and in Scituate, R.I. before she started raising her family.
She was active in the Girl Scouts for many years, serving as a volunteer leader and trainer, as well as a summer camp staff member. Jean was also a member of Lime Rock Baptist Church, where she was a youth group leader and secretary. She was a Cub Scout leader and member of a very active bowling league.
Jean enjoyed knitting, gardening, baking, cooking and completing jigsaw puzzles. She loved animals, especially the many pets she had throughout her life, and the birds she fed outside her window each winter. She also enjoyed traveling with her family in her later years.

Mrs. Smart was my Girl Scout Cadette/Senior Leader and I learned to love the outdoors and camping from her. She had knitted me a white winter hat that I wear to this day. I have taken all that I especially learned in Girl Scouting from her and I use this even today. She was a very special person and lived life to the fullest. My deepest condolences to the entire family.
