Walter McLaughlin Obituary

McLaughlin, Walter F.
83, passed away on Sunday, July 4, 2021. He was the beloved husband to Wanda (Peckham) McLaughlin for 33 years. Born in Providence on May 7, 1938, to John C. and Eleanor (Martin) McLaughlin. Walter was taught by The Sisters of Notre Dame at St. Teresa's School and lived his young life in the Olneyville Section of Providence. His father committed suicide in 1950 leaving Walter and his mother to do for themselves. Walter's hero was the late Fr. Peter J. Gibbins, his Pastor, who took Walter under his wing and paid his tuition to LaSalle Academy where he graduated in 1957. Early life was hard for Walter who worked many jobs; peddling papers, Murphy Caterers, and driving tow trucks for Bill Mullins to help his mother with their expenses. He loved baseball and somehow managed to play on C.Y.O, Parish Twilight, and American Legion teams. His jobs however prevented him from playing sports at LaSalle, which was a disappointment. In his Junior year at LaSalle, he was given a job as an errand boy at the Cranston Print Works Company and to play on the company softball team. He became a star of the team which led to his promotion to Cost Analyst in the company's main office. The Company Treasurer/VP became Walter's Mentor. In 1960, Walter joined the RI Air National Guard serving as Sgt. Air Policeman in the 143rd Tactical Airlift Group. After his active-duty service, he returned to work at CPW. He also enrolled at Bryant College in a degree program in economics. He became Credit Manager of CPW and became a member of the RI and NY Associations of Credit Management. His time was spent working between CPW's New York sale's office and Rhode Island. In 1965, he accepted a position as a Credit Officer for a large Boston bank and he was married the same year. In late 1966 he was recruited by Old Stone Bank in Providence for his credit background. He continued his studies at Bryant at night. He became Manager of the bank's Empire St. Office. Over the years, Walter's outgoing personality led to many happy hours and his drinking became a problem, which led to his dismissal from the bank and a divorce in 1969. He recovered in 1970 through AA and joined a team to start Domestic Bank where he worked until 1974 when he left to start McLaughlin Automotive Stores. Over the years, the company became a leader in auto parts distribution, employing over 100 people in its warehouse and 8 stores. He also started and sold two other businesses. In 2011 McLaughlin Automotive Stores was sold to Fisher Auto Parts of Virginia and Walter and Wanda retired. During his long career, Walter served on many boards and commissions. His term on the National Automotive Service Industry Association gained him national exposure and helped his company a great deal for many years. Walter had two loves. First his wife Wanda with whom he enjoyed having many horses, dogs, and cats at their home on Johnson's Pond. They enjoyed their card games, boat rides on the pond, cookouts with friends, and many cruises and trips to Europe. Walter said he could not have achieved success without Wanda as she was his true partner. Walter's second love was his Alma Mater, LaSalle Academy. He served on LaSalle's Board for many years and was Chairman from 1997-2000. LaSalle's Athletic Center is called "The McLaughlin Athletic Center" in his honor. Walter said, "LaSalle created good Americans" and he encouraged his classmates and friends to support the school. Walter and Wanda are people of faith who appreciated God's Blessings on them. Walter always said, "We did not get cheated." Walter's life was well spent. Walter's Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, July 10, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. in Saints John & Paul Church, 341 S. Main St., Coventry, RI. Interment with military honors will be in Swan Point Cemetery, Providence. Visiting hours will be Friday, July 9, from 3-7 p.m. in the Iannotti Funeral Home at MAPLE ROOT, 2000 Nooseneck Hill Rd. Dear Wanda,
I just learned of Walter´s passing today as we have been traveling back and forth for to New York this summer. Caryl and I offer our sympathies.
Going back to the good old ASAI
days in our lives, we reminisce those moments over and over. The accolades he so deservingly received and that spcial saddle he was presented. We framed the photo of the 4 of us white water rafting in Colorado and I pass by it every day.
Remembering the time you had us out for horseback riding with our kids and I thought I broke your horse´s back when he rolled over and squirmed after removing his saddle.
Walter was a one of a kind character, but it took both of you to make the loving successful couple you are.

Wanda I was in total shock when I read about Walter Mr. ( Mac. ). I couldn't get the words out while I was trying to tell my sister. I was treated like a son by that Icon of a man. I had the privilege of working for you and he for 6 years. But I was one of the lucky ones who got to know him a lot more than most. I was one of his managers and every Saturday I would get the " call ". Hey you stopping by to see me on your way home Al ? And I did every Saturday. Some of those trips had me in his office for hours talking and laughing. I will cherish those memories Wanda. I got to know a different side of him by spending all that time with him. I loved to pick his brain because he had a world and a half of knowledge and life experiences that I wanted to know about. Looking back I am so grateful that I was able to sit with him in his office and just B's about anything and everything. I could continue here forever. But I wouldn't run out of good things to say about him. I am so, so sorry Wanda I don't have the words to explain what I am feeling. You take care of yourself.

It was a pleasure to know and work with Walter. Walter always kidded me that he was the only one in our group ( The Alliance) that was older than me.
Wanda, I know you will miss Walter but he sure a lot of fun to be with.

Many adjectives have been used to describe Walter. Honest, hard working, generous, loyal etc. All of these are well deserved.. When I look at Walter's life what jumps out as is persistence. You may want to Google the quote on Persistence by President Calvin Coolidge..This trait led him to lead an iconic life. Walter epitomizes what the Nuns who taught me in Catholic School would refer to as a ' Fine Catholic Gentleman." As a fellow Alumnus of the Great LaSalle Academy I appreciate all that He did for our School. His loyalty and caring make him an iconic figure in the long and wonderful history of that School. May Walter now rejoice as He shares the joy of the Reserecton with Our Lord and Savior; who says to Him " Well done my Good and Faithful Servant." Saint John Baptist De LaSalle - Pray for Us. " "Live Jesus in Our Hearts - Forever."

I wanted to extend my deepest condolences to you, Mrs. Wanda McLaughlin, and to Mr. McLaughlin´s family. I knew Mr. McLaughlin more than 40 years ago as at the time, I was friendly with his oldest daughter. I remember my father and Mr. McLaughlin sharing long and what my Dad described as "great" talks while also referring ever so fondly of Mr. McLaughlin. I rode my first horse at his home. I have and will always remember him as a kind and caring man who put the needs of others above his own. I wish you some measure of peace in the memories that he left with each of you! I will never forget this warm and endearing gentleman!

Dear Wanda,
I am so saddened to learn of your beloved Walter's passing. He loved you both very much and I remain grateful for the gift you were to his life. I am holding you in thought, heart and prayer. May your faith sustain you, may your memories comfort you and may your friends strengthen you. I pray that each day dawns a little more brightly and I wish you peace. Fondly, Mary

Walter was a man of great character; anyone who had the opportunity to know him was truly blessed. Although we were on opposite sides of the spectrum, I always enjoyed our spirited and respectful debates we would have while working on his teeth. It was truly an honor to know him. He will be missed, but his passions and inspiration will endure. The Coventry Dental family offers are deepest condolences to Wanda.

Walter: a dear friend, trusted neighbor, mentor, fair boss, and strong community leader. I was fortunate to have him in my life to experience each of his fine qualities. I learned so much from Walter, at such an early age. He was a humble man, and it was clearly obvious that he did not focus on the impact that he had on our community however, it was evident that he nurtured and mentored many of his neighbors.
I worked for Walter at each of his businesses. I learned that work can be fun and that a good day´s work is rewarding and helps to build character. He taught me to never be afraid to try something new and to always be confident in my skills. He nicknamed me the KID and it stuck. I had the opportunity to meet with Walter and Wanda recently and he immediately referred to me as the Kid, with a big smile on his face.
Whenever I would see Walter, it would be a pleasant stroll down memory lane. He was always happy to talk and always had a sincere nature in his discussion. It was obvious that he felt a since of pride in the fact that he knew you as you were learning to become a responsible adult and that he had the opportunity to help you mature during this life journey.
Walter selflessly gave much of his life to our community and to our country; he showed no signs of slowing in his stride of giving back. He will be missed by many, and our world has lost a fine man.
Thank you for all that you have taught me in my youth and for the impact that this experience had in my success as an adult. I will deeply miss you, my friend.
