Donald Wonnie Obituary


Rev. Donald Samuel Wonnie, 82, of Reading, passed away February 19, 2012 at 5:05 p.m. in The Reading Hospital & Medical Center.

He was the husband of Tuzylene "Betty" (Bangura) Wonnie.

Born in Sierra Leone, West Africa, he was the son of the late David J. Wonnie and Miriam (George) Vester Lewis.

Rev. Wonnie was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Reading.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, David N., husband of Isha Wonnie, of Minnesota; daughters, Miriam A. Wonnie of Spring Township and her companion, Souveur Chery, and Donna J., wife of Daniel John Wah, of Spring Township.

He is also survived by his grandchildren: Donald H. Wonnie-Chery, Solomon Navo Wonnie, Faith Wonnie, Vida Wonnie, Danielle Wah and Richard Wah.

Also surviving are his sister, Miriam Vester Roy-McCauley, of Freetown, Sierra Leone, and brother, Jeffrey Lewis of Freetown, Sierra Leone.

Services from Wesley United Methodist Church, 101 West Windsor Street, Reading, PA 19601, Saturday, March 10, 2012 at 1:00 p.m., with Rev. Dr. David A. Knotts officiating. Interment will take place in Botown Cemetery, Sierra Leone. The family will receive friends in Bean Funeral Home, 3825 Penn Ave., Sinking Spring, Friday, March 9, 2012 from 6-8:00 p.m. and at the church Saturday 12-12:45 p.m.

Contributions may be made to Youth Organization-Rogers Memorial United Methodist Church, Bo, Sierra Leone c/o Wesley United Methodist Church at the above address in memory of Rev. Donald Samuel Wonnie. Online condolences may be made at www.beanfuneralhomes.com.

Mr. Wonnie was a kind and wise man I had the pleasure of working with at the YMCA. Mr. Wonnie touched many lives and always encouraged us to live a virtuous life. He will be missed by all! God bless the entire family, you are in our thoughts and prayers.
