Janice Shea Obituary

MERIDEN - Janice Weigand Shea, 83 years old, the wife of Wiliiam T. Shea, Esq., died suddenly on Sunday, April 8, 2018 at MidState Medical Center in Meriden.

Aside from her husband, she is survived by her children Mary, Bill, Ellen, Kathleen, Christine and Margo; sisters-in-law Cynthia Weigand, Beatrice "Betty" Bremer and Eileen Trainor; children-in-law, Yuri Dombrovski, Allen Mendelson, Suzanne Welder Shea and Matthew Barlow; grandchildren, Emily Dombrovskaya, Haley and Charlie Shea and Avery and Ella Smith; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents Joseph and Josephine Weigand; and her brother, Joseph Weigand, Jr., all of Meriden.

Janice's family, friends and neighbors have known her as a deeply empathetic, fiercely loyal, generous and gregarious woman devoted to her husband and family. Her compassion, insightfulness and humor, combined with a deep wisdom drawn from her Catholic faith, drew those she met into her orbit.  Unreservedly friendly and exuberant in all things, Janice spread light to those whose presence she graced.

She lived a rich life in the city of Meriden, a place she was proud to call home and which shaped her identity as a Polish and Irish Catholic with working class roots and deep community values.  While raising six children, Janice was a stalwart partner as her husband built political and professional careers in the 1960s and '70s and an active leader in nonprofit education, social services and religious organizations for most of her adult life.  A skier, tennis player, cook, gardener and consummate hostess for much of her life, Janice continued to take pleasure in good books, great conversations, her beloved Huskies basketball and the Red Sox.

Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 13, at John J. Ferry, Inc., 88 East Main St., Meriden.  A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, April 14, at 10 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, 35 Center St., Meriden, with Fr. Edward Nadolny presiding. Everyone is asked to meet directly at the church.  For online condolences and directions, please visit www.jferryfh.com.

Dearest Shea Family,
The Strautman family have wonderful memories of all the times over the many years we spent together. Our parents were great examples of living life to the fullest and they enjoyed every moment. Mrs. Shea's vivacious laugh along with sparkling personality will always be remembered. We are so sorry not to be there with you but we share deeply with you the loss of her light in this world.
With Sympathy,
The Strautmans (Renata, Larissa, Sabina & Renard)

Dear Shea family:
I feel blessed to have been one of Janice's closest friends while she was living in Charlemont. She was so full of joy and ready for the next adventure, whatever it may be. Those wonderful years skiing, playing tennis, road trips to Spags and beyond, gardening, planning dinners together, feeding on each ohers advice about home decorating, etc., there was never a dull moment. She had a generous spirit and I'm happy to have been part of her life. Please know that I am thinking of you all with love and blessings. I'm so sorry I will not be with you for the calling hours or the funeral. Dick is having surgery in Boston on Friday afternoon and will be recovering in Boston for at least 4 days after the surgery. Please know that my thoughts will be with you all.

Dear Mary
None of us got to know Janice, but by knowing you we can see she was warm and generous and raised wonderful human beings. By seeing the way you connect to people I can guess the kind of atmosphere you grew up in and what you got from Janice.
I'm so sorry that you had to loose her now and feel the deep void that is left behind her.
