Douglas Smith Obituary

GREENFIELD - Douglas M. Smith, 85, of Lunt Drive, died Tuesday (1-8-13) at Baystate Franklin Medical Center.
He was born in Burlington, VT, on April 15, 1927, the son of Clement and Marion (Mullings) Smith. Doug was a graduate of Classical High School in Springfield, Class of 1945. He then continued his education at Babson College where he graduated in 1950 with a degree in business.
He was a WWII U.S. Air Force veteran serving as Air Transport Command in Iceland.
Doug moved to Greenfield in 1978, after previously living in Bristol, VT, Longmeadow and Amherst.
Doug was a divisional merchandise manager at Wilson's Department Store before retiring in March of 1995. Previously he was employed at the D.M. Read Co. in Bridgeport, CT, and Forbes & Wallace Inc. After his retirement, he was employed by Dillon Chevrolet.
Doug was a member of the First Congregational Church in Longmeadow, serving on the board of deacons. He was also a member of the Second Congregational Church in Greenfield.
He was an avid New England sports fan. He also enjoyed traveling and taking many cruises with his wife Linda and he especially loved spending time with his family.
Among his survivors, Doug leaves his wife of 33 years, Linda (Coutu) Smith; two sons, Lawrence Smith and his wife Barbara Ahearn of Leeds and David Smith and his wife Sherri of Londonderry, NH; two daughters, Sharon McManus and her husband Paul of Acton and Nancy Schwartz and her husband Gregory of Amherst; a stepson, Todd Czernich and his wife Carolyn of Northfield; 10 grandchildren, Kathryn and Jonathon McManus, Christian and Aiden Smith-Ahearn, Leah Schwartz, Benjamin Schwartz and his wife Amber, Hadleigh and Eric Smith, Keith and Landon Warger, and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Saturday (1-12-13) at 11 a.m. at the Kostanski Funeral Home, 220 Federal St., with the Rev. Dennis LeBlanc officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
Calling hours will be held Friday evening from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 2nd Floor, 2080 Silas Deane Highway, Rocky Hill, CT 06067 or to Dakin Pioneer Valley Humane Society, P.O. Box 319, South Deerfield, MA 01373-0319.
