Jim Benton Obituary

Jim Lewis Benton, 33, of Nashville, Tenn., beloved husband, father, uncle, teacher and friend, passed away on Monday, October 22, in Williamsburg, Va., while doing what he loved, chaperoning a school group from Grassland Middle School.

Jim was born on November 6, 1978, in Porterville, Calif., to Patsy and Frank Benton. He was raised by his grandparents, Novena and Harold Neal, and embraced into the family of his uncle and aunt, John and Shirley McGuire, and their children, Johnna and Mark.

He is survived by his wife, Meredith Sullivan Benton, and daughter, Adalyn Shea Benton, both of Nashville.

Jim attended Monache High School, where he played saxophone in the award-winning band, earning a place in the California State High School Band, along with being a member of the baseball team. He graduated in 1996 as valedictorian.

After high school, Jim graduated from Porterville College with honors, and then went on graduate with a degree in humanities and received his teaching credential from Pepperdine University in 2001.

After a year of teaching eighth grade math at Medea Creek Middle School, Jim attended the University of Nottingham in Nottingham, England, where he earned a master's degree in education and human development. He returned to California and in subsequent years taught at Carmel and Medea Creek middle schools and Oak Park High School.

Jim was an avid baseball fan and enjoyed cheering on the New York Mets, as evidenced by daughter Adalyn's middle name, "Shea." In high school, he announced area baseball games for the local radio station. He also coached baseball at Carmel and Oak Park high schools.

Jim was committed to extending the learning of his students beyond the school walls, and outside the classroom he enjoyed chaperoning school trips to Washington, D.C., and Europe.

Jim was a seasoned traveler who had visited every continent. Some of his traveling highlights included a four-day trek to Machu Picchu, hiking the Milford Trek in New Zealand, and seeing India, Thailand, Antarctica, Egypt, Costa Rica and other countries.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to a scholarship fund that will allow a student who would otherwise not be able to travel to Washington, D.C., on the eighth-grade trip and/or the senior trip to Europe. Oak Park Unified School District, Attn: Dr. Tony Knight, 5801 East Conifer Street, Oak Park, CA 91377.

Services will be held on Sunday, October 28 at 4 p.m. at the Rockford Elementary School baseball field in Porterville, California, with a reception immediately following in the school cafeteria. The family respectfully requests that attendees wear New York Mets attire or orange and blue.

Pallbearers will be Mark McGuire, John Rodriguez, Jay Parmelee, Ian Trejo, Victor Anderson, Travis Moore, Matt Kalish and John McGuire. Honorary Pallbearers are Canaan McGuire, Simon McGuire, Brian Winsick, Ryan Pugh, Bill Dyer, Seth Trejo, Steve White, Ian Lopez, Balt Burns and Paul Dyer.

I remember my son talking about you, always with great enthusiasm. I told him of your passing and he said you were one of the best. I just assumed my son had been in your classes, but he told me that although he was not in your class you always spoke with him and you knew who he was. The same is what I experienced with you every time our paths crossed, always a cheery smile and an acknowledgement. It was a pleasure to have a hug with Meredith at the Memorial held on the Baseball field at OPHS. RIP Jim.

As his classmate for one year in Nottingham University, I felt so sad to know about all this. It's so hard to believe that a man as kind as Jim...I browsed all the pictures of us in the UK. It seems that I could still hear him say "really?" with those innocent eyes. will miss you much Jim.

For a man to have lived such a legacy for his short time on earth shows his life was meant to be, to spread the love of learning and a spark to each class that he served. Each student mattered and none were loved less. He'll always be remembered as as someone that was there to motivate, to show compassion and give each student the chance to say, "I Can." Our hopes as a parent is that more teachers follow his path and that students that launch their profession into teaching that they follow "The Benton Way." Our love and prayers are with you and family.

I was lucky enough to meet Jim my freshman year of high school. He could make me laugh like crazy! Jim had a huge impact on my life while we were in college and I have always been grateful that God put him in my life at the time he did. Jim never judged or criticized, he simply wondered how he could be a better person himself. He was one of a kind. His family welcomed me with open arms and showed me such love and they are in my prayers now.
Meredith, what a beautiful family you made. Jim and I hadn't talked in over 15 years but I thought of him often and hoped that he was well.I can see now he had all he wanted and more! I have no doubt that you understand the power of prayer...Jim often reminded me of it! Please know that you and your family are in the prayers of me and mine.

I got to know Jim while studying at Nottingham. He was one of the most kind and genuine people I've ever met, but with a uniquely dry wit, too. I will always consider him my friend.

My heart is breaking with yours and I want you to know that you are in my prayers. May God surround you with His comfort, His presence, His peace that surpasses the circumstances, and may He meet your every need, moment by moment, day by day, year by year. I love you and I'm here for you!

Jim and I went to Pepperdine together. We were both pretty involved with Campus Ministry stuff and the Songfest group Gamma Ghkkkkkt Sigma. I remember Jim had a great baritone voice, one you could listen to for hours. It seemed that Jim was everyone's friend. He was sincere and was completely invested in whoever he was conversing with. He had a passion for people. You could tell that he truly loved people and wanted to invest in them. Jim showed his faith everyday and I never saw that waver. You could tell he loved Jesus and that spilled over into everything he did and everyone he touched. Jim will be missed but not forgotten, his legacy in his short time here on earth will live on forever.

Jim was my roommate and a great friend at Pepperdine. We were both transfer students, and bonded instantly. I have so many great memories of him. He was one of the kindest, sincerest, most genuinely positive and friendly people I have ever known--a man who made me want to be a better person. That's the effect he had on people.

Meredith and Adalyn: I hope that you will take some comfort in the huge legacy of countless lives he touched during his too-brief time among us. I loved him like a brother, and always will. Requiescat in pace, dear friend.

You were the first teacher to ever make my son try in math. Your presence at the D.C. trip for both my sons made a lasting impression that has fueled their love of travel, interest in history and sense of curiosity. Your generosity of spirit has touched so many and will continue to shine within those who were lucky enough to know you.

Dear Meredith,
It is a tragedy that Jim's incredible life of service was cut so short. Reading all the beautiful tributes to him, I am struck by how much passion he packed into his life. He truly made more use of his 33 years than most do in twice the time. I hope that will bring you and the rest of his family a small bit of comfort in the months ahead. You and Addy are in my thoughts and in my heart.

Meredith- I am greatly saddened by the tragic loss of your husband. Reading all the touching and heartfelt tributes that have been pouring in from around the country brings home what an incredible person he was and what a positive impact his life had upon so many people. His legacy will surely live on through Adalyn and through all the students whose lives he touched through his kindness and dedication through the years.

Thinking of and praying for you, Addy, and all of Jim's friends, family, and loved ones during this difficult time.

You touched all of our lives in such a positive way. Either in the classroom, on the school campus, on the baseball field as a coach, on the DC trip as a chaperon, or at the mall when we would bump into you. It was always a special moment. Thank you for being the amazing man that you are and for giving us a chance to know you. RIP. Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to Meredith and Adalyn Shea. You will always be remembered deeply in our hearts.
