Mary Routh Obituary

Mary Routh
7/9/2024
Mary Owen Routh, a former resident of Stamford and Greenwich, CT, passed away peacefully at her home in Savannah, GA, at the age of 104.
Mary's longevity, creativity and adventurous spirit inspired all who knew and loved her.
Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on June 2, 1920, she was the first of three daughters born to Dr.Raymond G. Owens (a respected Veterinarian, whose grandfather started the city's first brewery, "Owens Ale") and Ethel Owen, who later became a well-known actress in radio soap operas, the Broadway stage and television.
After leaving Milwaukee, Mary's first career was in social work, as a personal assistant to her cousin, Edna Gladney, the founder and Director of the Texas Children's Home in Fort Worth, TX. (Now, the Gladney Center for Adoption). She later moved to New York, and, then, Connecticut to follow her passion for interior design. She began her work at Lord and Taylor's Design Department and later as a Design Associate at Décor in Cos Cob, CT, serving many happy clients in the NY/CT area. Prior to moving to Savannah (where she retired), Mary was a resident, for many years, of both Greenwich and Stamford, CT.
Mary was predeceased by her two sisters, Virginia Owen Loock, formerly from Greenwich, CT and the actress Pamela Britton (Steel), formerly of Los Angeles, CA. Her mother, Ethel Owen, died at the age of 103, leaving a high goal for longevity.
Mary is survived by her nieces, Katherine Steel Ferber (of Moraga, CA), Diana Loock Shildneck (Hilton Head, SC), Melissa Loock Rozmus (Greenwich, CT), her nephew William Loock (Southbury, CT), and the many friends she made over the years.
Services will be private. Donations may be made in her honor to a charity of choice.
