Peter - I did not know Janis for long, but I loved her writing and thought she was a hoot long before I met her. She lived up to that. If you ever find yourself on Skinner St, stop by the doc's office and let us know you are ok.... I can hardly express how sorry I am for your loss.

To the entire Osbourne/McCann Family-
My most sincere heartfelt sympathy goes out to each and every one of you at the loss yet another true "Port Jervian". I grew up in West End...an honor in itself...reading Janice's columns and wanting to write like that! When I went to college, I was able to have my own human interest column that I KNOW was greatly influenced by Janice's columns. One I particularly remember was one about meeting up with an old friend who was in town...and the only time they could find was to the time she needed to go grocery shopping. Simple. efficient. That was Port Jervis and West End. I will always hold Janice's writing in my heart....bless all of you...until we see her again.

To Peter, Jan's children, family and friends,
We were once joined at the hip, we were "Sweet & Neat", shared all our dreams, heartaches and childhood deeds of mischief. We even shared our name.
Though time separates us and we go our different ways, your first and longest best friend is always held in your heart in a special place, where I hold Jan.
I am so sorry, but I know Jan would not want you to suffer, only to embrace life open-heartedly and unafraid. Embrace it all.....Love each other.
I will miss kowing you are here old friend, but I take comfort in knowing you are organizing your niche in heaven and telling everyone just what you think.
The other Janice Lee....

CORRECTION
Due to a technical problem, the entry that appeared on page 5 in Tuesday's edition had the incorrect name attached to it. The correct name should have been Roger and Judy Maltby. We apologize for any inconvience this may have cause.

Janis, I know you are watching from above with your smile, shaking your head in that manner you did so often at the Gazette saying only some one from production would do this. It was great knowing you and great working with you for so many years. God obviously needed a story teller.

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

Be Still

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

I was fortunate enough to work with Janis at The Gazette from 1996-97. She was an excellent journalist, tireless worker and esteemed colleague. She lived and breathed community journalism. I will always remember her dedication to her craft and community. She was a light in the darkness during some difficult times for all of the employees yet she reminded us through her tireless work ethic and wonderful sense of humor that there was always a paper to put out and a story that needed telling. My greatest sympathies to Peter and the family.

Good Bye old friend. You will certainly be missed by all that knew you and loved you. We had so much fun at the "old" Gazette that it was unbelievable that we actually produced a newspaper every day. You were almost as crazy as the rest of us. You will be missed. Our prayers are with you Peter.

My love and sympathy to Peter and Janis' family.

Janis gave me the chance to start writing for The Gazette, and I'm so happy to be a part of the community newspaper that was so important to her for so many years.

She will be missed at the monthly gathering of our reading group and at the Friends of the Port Jervis Free Library.

Thank you Janis for your guidance and friendship. Rest in peace.

To The Family of Janis:So sorry to learn of Jan's passing.Everyone knew she could write, but I also knew she could use that oven as a baker.I was the family insurance agent when she lived on Francis St many years ago and her chocolate cakes were out of this world. When she was first starting to write she frequently called me "her biggest encouraging fan".She had a mouth? You'd better believe it.However, you always knew where she stood on an issue. She was a good person and will be missed.
