David Chiara Obituary

David Chiara

Lynn, MA - David was called home to be with the Lord on September 30, 2019. He resided in Lynn, Mass. He was born in Redding on March 14, 1960. He is survived by his mother, Johannah Metz, father, Robert Chiara, brother, Charles Chiara, niece Dawcia Chiara and her sons Nollyn and Austin Cooper, and other loving family members.

David attended Redding grammar schools and Shasta High School where he excelled scholastically. He received his BS degree in mathematics from the University of Calif., Davis. He continued his education at the Washington University Medical School in St. Louis where he received his M.D. and PhD.

David did his PhD clinical research at the Harvard Medical School Neurobiology lab. After this experience he determined that his primary interest was in research, not in clinical medicine. He became a key member of the Harvard neurobiology lab and provided key instruction and support to many members of the department. In recognition of his valued contribution David was appointed instructor in Neurobiology in 2005, an appointment made only rarely. His research and multiple scientific publications have had an impact on the Harvard Neurobiology Department and the worldwide scientific community.

David was known for his kindness and generosity and was always willing to help when needed. He will be sorely missed and remembered with love by his family and friends.

A celebration of life service will be held at Grace Baptist Church, at 3782 Churn Creed Road, on Saturday, November 2 at 10 a.m.

Johanna and Chuck my very deepest sympathies. I have always held a very special place in my heart for your entire family.
Chuck you came first for I met you when I was only 15.
Johanna you were a saving grace in the most difficult time of my life. You gave me guidance and support, a safe haven for both my girls and I, most of all you gave us all your unconditional love.
David was special to me in so many ways. He introduced my girls and I to Art and History Museums and Concerts in the park. We could spend hours at the zoo. He is the reason I planned and saved for my daughters higher education.
David loved us, shared with us and shaped us and that is a legacy that will forever live on.

Johanna, Dear. Vicki and I are both so very sorry to hear of the loss of your beloved son. We will always remember his long curly hair and big grin. We wish to tell you how sorry we are that neither of us were able to attend his memorial service today. Vicki is working now, and I have been pretty ill. I still don't feel confident to drive much by myself, as I am still kind of dizzy and unsteady. Vicki had to work today, and could not get away. Please forgive our absence. We will always keep him in our prayers, and send our most sincere condolences to you and the Metz and Chiara families. God bless you all. Janet and Vicki

David was a good friend of mine when I was in high school. He was a year younger and very bright, but cool. We played tennis together a lot and I really enjoyed hanging out with him. I am very sad to hear of his passing and proud of his accomplishments. I am not surprised by his accomplishments, but I want everyone to know that this brainy guy was so fun to be around and so full of enthusiasm. I wish I had reached out to him before now. I was hiking with a good friend on September 30, 2019. My friend is another SHS alumni and asked her if she remembered David. She did and we wondered out loud what great things he had accomplished. Thank you to his family for posting his picture from high school and one from more recently. David was a good soul and gave back to the world in so many ways. Proud to call him my friend. It was a very sad day to read about David's passing. You should all be very proud of him and the many friends he made in his life time. I no longer live in Redding and will not be able to attend his services, however I want his family to know how much I appreciate my friend David.
We shall meet again David.
Your friend,
Mary M. Gill
