When my mother was asked many years ago what she would do if she'd won the lottery, she said "I already have." Her response summed up how she felt about what Dr. Humbert had done for me. I was a patient of his at Buffalo Children's Hospital some 30+ years ago. Dr. Humbert's intersection with me, and my family, was like winning the lottery for my mom. Diagnosed with a rare and life threatening blood disorder, Dr. Humbert had the courage to try an experimental treatment. Eighteen months and two rounds of treatment later, I showed signs of a full recovery. I have been going strong ever since and am a 47 year old woman with a great life. I will always be thankful that our paths crossed that Easter morning all those years ago and have wonderful memories of Dr. Humbert. One that I cherish is the memory I have of he and I being interviewed for the Children's Hospital Telethon. When asked what the toughest thing was about treating a patient like me, he said, "The toughest thing is that for so long you get to see this person everyday -- sometimes two or three times a day. You get to know them, their family, and all about who they are. Then they recover and you don't get to see them much anymore, if at all." These words and the wonderful person Dr. Humbert was, I will never forget.
