GALESBURG - Raymond A. Hendricks, 88, Galesburg, died at 3:45 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 2, 2017, at Hawthorne Inn.
He was born March 19, 1929, in Galesburg, the son of Clarence V. and Edith I. Johnson Hendricks. He married Lois M. Hopkins on July 11, 1954, in Altona.
Ray is survived by his wife of 63 years, Lois of Galesburg; his two sons, Andy (Tammy) Hendricks and Thomas (Paula) Hendricks, both of Galesburg; his two daughters, Susan (Chris) Schroeder of Bolingbrook and Patricia Hendricks of Nashville, Tennessee; his brother, Jerry (Barbara) Hendricks of Woodhaven, Michigan; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one niece and one nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Joyce Hendricks.
Ray served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War from 1950-1954.
He owned and operated Hendricks Pump Service from 1959-1991. Ray never truly retired. He continued to show up to work and hanging out in the shop until just a few months ago. He graduated from Galesburg High School in 1947 and attended University of Illinois. He was a member of Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285 and VFW Post 2257. Ray was a member of First Lutheran Church, serving as past vice president of the council and was on the usher board. Ray and Lois were responsible for preparing the coffee Sunday mornings before church. Ray enjoyed playing golf and was a longtime member of Lake Bracken Country Club. He enjoyed watching and playing sports, especially basketball.
Memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2017, at First Lutheran Church. Rev. Pamela Marolla will officiate. Visitation will be 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church. Private family burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery with military rites by VFW 2257/Legion 285 Veterans Honor Guard. Seeing Ray's picture (and this one just about perfectly captures the way I've known and remembered him...with that terrific smile) brings back such a flood of memories, all good. Those New Years Eve parties where the kids would wait till, "it got later in the evening", and it was easier to sneak stuff. Ray providing analysis on the status of Silver Streak or Illini basketball. Ray hoping for a White Sox World Series, and suffering through Jack's gloating over the success of the Cardinals. The lifelong friendship that our fathers and their friends shared is something that all of us benefited from as we got to see how loyalty and friendship are done. Sadly such friendship is all to rare today. I'm very sorry for your loss, it is a hard day for sure, but know that you are not alone. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. -- Jeff Anderson & family

Dearest Lois, Susie, Patty, Andy and Tom.

Just looking at Rays' photo brings back only the finest of childhood memories. I clearly see and feel the love and fun all of us kids had at your place when our parents would get together and make home made pizza, play indoors and/or outdoors for hours, creating whole new realities as a matter of routine. There was no end to our adventures! On many levels, Ray and Lois were beloved and trusted as family. Susie, Patty, Andy and Tom: you are my cousins, my extended family, from whom I feel never separated. Lois, my mother from another, always welcoming and kind. A of mother to us all. Your worries about Ray's health and care are lessened now. You have your earthly family to care for you. You have a loving community of us to help you at this time. Lean on us, we can help. I love you so much, and have been thinking of you and your family constantly the past few days. Eat, rest and reflect on your blessed life, family and friends. Ray lives on in our hearts forever.
