James Holman Obituary

James Holman, 65, died in the early hours of January 27 at his Portland home. With him were his wife Kristi St. Amant, son Wyeth, daughter and son-in-law Kira and Sean, and sister Judy.

A public memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, February 23, at The Gorge Pavilion of Marine Park in Cascade Locks.

James was born in 1948 in Minot, N.D., to Reynold "Bud" and Myrtle Holman. When he was 9, the family moved to Oregon. James graduated from Cascade Locks High School in 1966. Over time, working in jobs as varied as forestry and resume-writing, he earned a bachelor's degree in English and a master's degree in journalism from the University of Oregon.

He became a career journalist, with stints as reporter, photographer or editor at The Daily Astorian, The Columbian in Vancouver, Wash., and the San Diego Union-Tribune in California. He was news editor at The Register-Guard in Eugene and science editor at The Oregonian in Portland, where he ended his career but not his many interests.

He continued to attend the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, to hike the Columbia River Gorge, to walk on the beach, to take photographs, and to read prodigiously. Long divorced, he searched for a friend from high school days, found her on the East Coast and, in a storybook ending, they married in 2008. James earned TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certification from the UO before he and his wife became Peace Corps volunteers in 2010.

"Life flows on riverlike, and one must learn as best one can to navigate the shallows, run the treacherous rapids and plumb the deceptive pools," James wrote in a forward to a book he finished days before he died. The book is based on dozens of e-mails he wrote to family and friends during the couple's three years of teaching English in Romania.

Diagnosed with Stage IV pancreatic cancer in August, James told a friend that he "decided to skip anger and denial and go straight to acceptance - not the acceptance of oh, whatever. The acceptance of the probable, and a turning of my resources toward how to face it gracefully." As he reassured his family and many friends, he had lived a good, full life and could now be present in the moment and grateful for each day that he was blessed to wake up to and enjoy.

James' parents and brother, Wayne Holman, preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife Kristi; son Wyeth Holman; daughter and son-in-law Kira and Sean Williams; stepchildren Natalie and Justin Kinsey; sister Judy Willing; a niece and a nephew.

James donated his body for medical education in Oregon. Contributions in James' memory may be made to the James and Wayne Holman Scholarship Fund, c/o Paul Lindberg, Executive Director, Hood River Educational Foundation, 1009 Eugene St., Hood River, OR 97031.

I worked all too briefly (two years) with James at The Daily Astorian. He was not only a great talent, but one of the nicest, gentlemanly and overall wonderful people I have ever met. He was there for me at a particularly difficult time in my life. He will always have a special place in my heart.

He was a journalist I much admired, a man I instinctively liked. I'm glad that Monica and I happened to meet him and Kristi at Cape Kiwanda and then in Eugene near the beginning of their great but altogether too brief adventure. We hope you will publish his Rumanian book and let us know when you do. Kristi, please let us know where you are so we can keep in touch. Paul Denison and Monica Thelestam. Solna, Sweden

Jamie Holman was a calm, self assured wonderful man with an engaging sense of humor. As I recall from high school, he was also one hell of a basketball player.

When James was a student at the UO, he observed my oral skills class on a weekly basis. My students adored James and when they would see him on campus, they would say "Hi, Mr. James". I was saddened to learn about his passing away. What a gentle and gracious man. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

I met James when he was a student in my class in the Spring of 2009, preparing to go into the Peace Corps and teach English. He soon became a friend and I so enjoyed hearing of his adventures and seeing his amazing photos from the 3 years in Romania. We exchanged many tales of teaching in the years since. I only heard this morning about his passing and am devastated to hear of this loss. A beautiful light has gone out but I will carry his glow with me always. Much love to all the family!

When James and I worked together, usually on a side-by-side basis as his duties and mine came together, I was struck by his warm, calm, intelligent manner as several staffers cooperated to make things happen as they should. Listening to those who knew him better, I can see that that is the kind of person James was in life in general. All best wishes to James' family.

James was a golden boy and a golden friend-- and humble about both. I will forever honor my days of sitting next to him the newsroom, his long legs stretched out, his sweetness and competence spread everywhere.
