Lloyd R. "Pete" Sorenson

1916 - 2009

Lloyd R. "Pete" Sorenson, Professor Emeritus of History at the University of Oregon, died on August 15, 2009, of natural causes at age 92.

Lloyd was born in North Dakota, graduated from the University of North Dakota, then enrolled in graduate school at the University of Illinois. During World War II he served aboard ship in the U.S. Navy, where he displayed extraordinary judgment and courage after the ship was hit by a kamikaze aircraft during the Battle of Okinawa.

After the war he married Claris E. ?Betty? Calnan, also of North Dakota. He obtained his Ph.D in history from the University of Illinois in 1947. Later that year he began his teaching career at the U of O, where he taught until his retirement in 1983. He lived in Eugene until earlier this year, when he moved to Washington State to be closer to family. His wife Betty preceded him in death in 2006.

He is survived by his sons Peter R. Sorenson (Virginia) of Greeley, CO and Thomas C. Sorenson (Jane) of Sultan, WA, four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at First Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, 1050 E. 23rd Ave., Eugene, OR at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, September 18, 2009. The family requests memorial gifts to First Congregational Church or to the general scholarship fund of the University of Oregon.Please sign the guest book at
