Joseph Arthur Murray

Joseph Arthur (Buzzoo) Murray, 83, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, March 21, 2007. Joseph was born in Roanoke, Va. ,a son of the late Abner and Sadie Murray. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was always a tough competitor in all sports, and was a Golden Glove Champion at age 17. He was also an avid golfer all his life, winning a golf tournament in Salem the first time he ever played. Joseph was a member of Blue Hills Golf Club, Ole Monterey Golf Club, and the American Legion. He participated and sponsored bowling teams at All-Star Lanes. He was the owner of Buzzoo's Drive-In Restaurant and Black Angus Steakhouse for 35 years. He loved to go on trips with friends to Miami, Las Vegas and Atlantic City. Surviving is his beloved wife of 50 years, Anna Dent Murray; his son, Joseph M. (Nino) Murray of Roanoke; his sister, Doris Murray Jacobs of Salem; a niece, Jennifer Ayers and husband Wayne of Roanoke; nephews, Steven Jacobs and wife Celene of Virginia Beach, Frederick Jacobs and wife Connie, and their son Nicholas, of Salem; cousins, Delores Powers and husband Hughie of Chesapeake, Barbara Issac and husband Sam of Lexington, Ky., Shelia Thomas, widow of Ippy Thomas of Rocky Mount. The family would like to say thanks to Dr. Shiner and Dr. Malpass and nurses on 7th Floor South (CCU) at Roanoke Memorial Hospital, the emergency room and Roanoke Rescue Squad for the wonderful care and concern shown Buzzoo during his recent illness. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Elias Marionite Catholic Church (Cove Rd.) Saturday, March 24, 2007, 11 a.m., with the Rev. Rodolph Wakim officiating. Interment in St. Andrew's Diocesan Cemetery. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to St. Elias Marionite Catholic Church. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Friday at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel, where a prayer service will be at 7:30p.m.
