Paul C. Buford Jr. passed away peacefully on Monday, March 6, 2023, at the age of 90, in Roanoke, Va.
Paul was born on October 11, 1932, to Paul Chalmers Buford Sr. and Anne Warren Buford, and grew up in Roanoke.
He attended high school at Randolph-Macon Academy and went on to graduate from Randolph-Macon College. Paul married Frances Carroll Burnett in 1967, and they raised two daughters.
Paul enjoyed a successful 30-year career in banking and was active in the Roanoke community. He served on the boards of the Kiwanis Club, Downtown Roanoke Inc., the Blue Ridge Independent Living Center, and the Shenandoah Club, and was a lifelong member of Roanoke's Second Presbyterian Church where he served as both a deacon and an elder.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents, and sisters Anne Buford Berkeley and Susan Buford.
He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Frances Buford; daughters, Kate Eager (Bill) and Liz Hawthorne (John); brother, Guy Buford; grandchildren, Liam, Annie, Jack, and Cole Eager, and Gray Hawthorne; as well as several other family members and many dear lifelong friends.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, March 12, 2023, at Oakey's Downtown Chapel in Roanoke at 318 Church Avenue. The Memorial Service will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday at Second Presbyterian Church, 214 Mountain Avenue in Roanoke with a reception immediately following.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Brain Injury Services of Southwest Virginia (bisswva.org) or to the charity of your choosing. Online condolences may be shared with the family at www.Oakeys.com.

Paul I will miss you and your smile, you always had a joke or an quote for me to read, and a comment about different things in the news, I enjoyed my visit and work with you. You will be missed.

I have known Paul and Frances for almost 44 years. I worked with Paul as a physical therapist at Roanoke Memorial Hospital when he suffered his stroke. I was amazed at the support he and his family had during this time. The leaders of the Roanoke Valley came together and provided bedside care throughout his stay until he was transferred to another facility for rehabilitation. Then, in the next few years, these same leaders drove the effort to create the 28 bed RMH Inpatient Rehab Unit on the second floor of the Rehab Building. In October, 1985, the unit opened.
I was honored to work on this unit for almost 25 years serving this special population. Paul was a wonderful man and Frances was an amazing partner. I was proud to have been a part of his life and am sorry to hear of his passing.

Dear Frances and Family, What an exceptional man Paul was. I have fond memories of our support group when he would look very serious and then say something totally hilarious! Both of you saved me when our son sustained a brain injury and you tracked me down at UVa to offer help and comfort.
So many are blessed to have you and Paul in their lives..

So sorry for your loss. I was fortunate to have known and worked with him both at United VA Bank and then again when Colonial American merged with Crestar. Great man. He will be missed
