I went to John Nelson grade school with Alan. He was a very nice kid. We used to play together. We lived right around the corner from him on Charles St. in Rockford. Unfortunately we moved away when I was 12 and lost track. All the wonderful nice things written about him here sound like him. It sounds like he had a wonderful life. Rest on peace Alan.

I had Mr. Hornbeck for a substitute teacher several times during my four years at Jefferson. He was our favorite sub hands down, even though he wasn't our everyday teacher he made an effort to connect with us students and try to help with any problem we may have had . So sad to hear of his passing.. He will be greatly missed

I'm lucky to have had the opportunity to work with Al at Jefferson High School as well. I'm saddened to hear of his passing. "Tumultuous" describes that year (2007-2008) perfectly, but daily interactions with Al made it enjoyable. Rest in peace.

I lived with Alan and his parents for 9 weeks while I student taught at Rockford East H.S. Alan was about 11-12 years old. Our parents rapidly became close friends. My sister and I remained friends with Alan after his parents passed away. Dad and Alan went fishing together many times. Alan would visit us each summer when my husband and I spent the summers in Stockton, IL. What a sense of humor! We will miss him terribly, but his suffering is over. He fought the good fight for several years.

Alan was a wonderful person who would help a person in need even if he too was in need. Knowing him for forty years, his passing is a heart felt loss for me. We considered each other brothers which started shortly after we met in the dorms at ISU. We have journeyed a long way togeather even though we lived over a thousand miles apart. God bless you Alan; for your now in a better place.

I worked with Al at Jefferson High School. We had a lot of laughs together in a very tumultuous year. He was a very loyal friend and had a tremendous sense of humor. I can't think of him without smiling that quickly turns into a laugh. I know he is fishing in his place in Heaven.
