CHARLOTTE - Dr. Everett Wayne Harris died March 3, 2009, at the age of 74. The eldest son of Lucille (Elwood) Harris and Homer Harris, he was born in Morrisville, Vermont, September 16, 1934 and was raised on his family's hill farm in Wolcott. He went to one-room schoolhouses for his first eight grades. His first paid job was to build the fire and sweep before school began and in high school, he drove a milk route in the morning before class.
After graduating from Peoples Academy of Morrisville, he attended the University of Vermont, and received his B.S. in agricultural education in 1957. After college, he taught at Chelsea High School, Peoples Academy, and Lamoille Union Career Center and farmed and raised Christmas trees. He served as chairman of the Wolcott school board and on the Lamoille County Planning Commission.
He was instrumental in preserving the Fisher Covered Railroad Bridge and in founding Lamoille County Field Days. He led a very active young farmers' group.
After 10 years of teaching high school, he studied for his doctorate in vocational-technical education at the University of Illinois. Following five years as an assistant professor at Marshall University in West Virginia, he returned to his alma mater in 1978 as an associate professor in Occupational and Extension Education in the College of Agriculture.
In 2000, he retired from UVM as Professor Emeritus, Community Development and Applied Economics. Since then, he has worked for the Vermont Department of Education, Career and Technical Education as Interim State Consultant in agriculture and natural resources and State FFA (Future Farmers of America) Youth Organization Advisor.
He helped establish statewide employment projections for technical education programming. He has worked in an advisory role with career and technical centers all over Vermont and has served on national boards.
He was awarded an Honorary American Farmer Degree by the National FFA, a Distinguished Service Award by the National Alliance of Business and honored as an Outstanding Member of the Education Community by the Vermont Department of Education.
In 2007, the UVM College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and UVM Extension school honored him with the Sinclair Cup for his distinguished service and exemplary leadership. It recognized his career-long contribution to Vermont agriculture and his efforts to reposition Vermont's agricultural education for the future.
He served as president of the board of trustees for the Vermont FFA Foundation and was vice president, Learning for Life Programs, of the Green Mountain Council/Boy Scouts of America. He served on the board of the National FFA Organization.
He lived in Charlotte, Vermont, with his wife Kathleen McKinley Harris where they raised their daughters, Susannah and Elizabeth. He will be dearly missed by his wife and daughters, sons-in-law Bryan Dicker and Dan Bigman and his three grandchildren, Maxwell, Katherine and Samuel Dicker as well as his brothers Robert Harris of Wolcott and Dale Harris of Brandon.

I first met Everett at a Board Meeting of the Green Mountain Council about five years ago. I was new to the area and was in need of some new friends. With Everett that was easy. Behind the dry New England humor was a very warm and caring man. I am thankful to have know and worked along side Everett since then, and only wish that it could have gone on for much longer.

Everett Harris is one of the finest people we will ever have had the opportunity to know. He lived a life of honor and integrity. He loved his students, his colleagues and friends, but most all, he loved his family. He had a great sense of humor, which enriched the lives of all who knew him. He was a proud man. But not in a braggadocio way. Quietly, confidently, he grew to become a giant in his profession. He never lost the sense humulity of a man who knew what it meant to earn a living by working the land. He understood his students, and he especially understood that each of us, is unique, and we each learn best in different ways. In a sense, we all were his students, because we all learned from his wisdom, and from his example. We've lost a great friend in Everett Harris. But all our best memories, and the love, will live forever in our hearts. And we will do our best to honor those memories, and that love, as we aim to live our lives even a portion as well as he lived his.

My condolences and prayers go to Everett, and all members of his family. He was a quiet, steady influence on the Green Mountain Council Board for many years, he never missed a detail, always a great Scout in his contributions to our efforts. He certainly exemplified the points of the Scout Law in his life, and his dealings with all of us. Thanks Everett, for all that you have given to us! And Peace to you, and all of the family, as we remember, and celebrate your time with us.

Condolences to the family of Everett. His energy will be missed by the Green Mountain Council-BSA. Although I did not know him well, I enjoyed our "quick" conversations at GMC E-Board meetings. I am honored to have known him.

A man who served the scouts as long as Everett did is worthy of honor and respect. Although I did'nt know Everett well, he is part of a long line of Vermonters who gracefully gave what they could to the kids of Vermont. God bless, Everett.

Everett was one of the most generous men I had ever met. He worked with me on the Learning for Life program for the Boy Scouts. I was always taken with how much he cared for the students, Scout, teachers and the communities. He was willing to give leadership to a project that needed his touch. He saw the big picture and was always willing to listen and give an opinion. He will truly be missed. I know I am a better person for knowing Everett and learning from him.

Everett Harris was truly a wonderful man. He was humble, conscientious, committed to his causes, and great fun to be around. I got to know him during the four years I served as the President of the Green Mountain Council, Boy Scouts of America. He was the Vice-President for our Learning for Life programs, always did his work quietly and capably, and brought both knowledge and humor to our Board meetings. I can see from my own experience with him and his many other accomplishments that his was truly a life well lived. I, and many other adult Scouters, will miss him greatly.

Kathleen, I was shocked and saddened to learn about Everett's passing. I will miss his smile and chuckle, and not having him as a friend to talk with. We are in Arizona and will be unable to attend the services in person, but we will be there in heart. We will keep you and your family in our prayers.
